Instagram post 18112223950065949 Town Christmas parades make me happy. This was a fun Advent activity today. #christmasmemories #Christmas parade #familyadvent #homeschoolfamily #familyfun #northcarolinaliving
Instagram post 18081114850134905 Today is my day to teach the middle school boys book club. I love hearing all of their ideas, but mostly I love that they are loving books!
.
This month we read Max and the Midknights. Cute book with some great themes!

Instagram post 18079266424178861 Our Advent activity today was to make a dried orange wreath. I got the project from A Gentle Advent: Colonial Christmas by @larasplace . I'll link it on my profile.
.
I absolutely adore Colonial Williamsburg at Christmas time, so I am excited to have this colonial decoration in my home.
.
A Gentle Advent is full of great, peaceful activities to keep kids engaged over the holiday season.

Instagram post 17847290188758235 Today's Advent activity was to decorate a gingerbread house. I only buy one with the idea that my kids will communicate and work together. Sometimes that happens. Today it involved a lot of loud opinionated voices. 🤷

Instagram post 18116195290005920 This is one of my favorite Christmas ornaments ♥️. I love ornaments with memories attached. The vast majority of our ornaments are either made by children or souvenirs from vacations.
.
This ornament is my daughter's handprint turned into snowmen.

Instagram post 17875042795497994 Do you use your 'good' china? I love using ours. We use it every holiday, but also random days.
.
Most of the china was a wedding gift from my husband's grandmother. She is no longer with us, but I think about her every time I open the china cabinet.
.
I have always allowed my children to use the china too. I want them to have happy memories around my table and that includes feeling worthy of the 'special' dishes. Amazingly, very few pieces have broken.
.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Instagram post 18094991539098430 I still use manipulatives when teaching middle and high school math. Today we used unifix cubes to build ratios.

Instagram post 17866744648557102 My daughter is a little more than halfway through this personal finance curriculum. It is fantastic! Each week she learns about one aspect of adult financial life - taxes, renting an apartment, buying a house, joining finances with a spouse, having kids, choosing insurance, etc. This might be the most important/useful class of the year.

Instagram post 18072017557160550 We visited our local art museum today as part of our history units. I love that we can go and see Ancient Greek and Ancient Roman art in person.

Instagram post 17843250328826005 Guys, I set this out for my kids and they flocked to it! 🦃 They finished their schoolwork earlier today and were looking for something to do. This fit the bill with a festive holiday flair. Grab your free copy through the link in my bio!

Instagram post 18081543415081419 Yesterday evening I decided I was tired of nagging my children to do their school work. I needed a new plan that made THEM responsible for getting it all done.
.
I made each child a check list with all of their assignments for the week. With the exception of schedules classes and field trips, they can work at whatever pace they want. .
It has been really interesting to watch today!
.
One child has been working diligently since I handed her the checklist last night. She said she plans to have Friday off. .
My other child has chosen to work a little slower, doing one task pee subject each day. He likes having his free time spread out. That works for me too. .
I'll let you know how it is working in a few weeks, but right now this seems like a good way to encourage independence and responsibility.

Instagram post 17858343358611172 Today felt very much like a Monday. The weather was gloomy and the kids were cranky. Even my dog was mad at me!
After a messy day (emotionally or actually messy) I try to spend a few minutes tidying up and putting things away.
It is a reminder that tomorrow is a fresh start full of grace. ♥️ #homeschoolmom #momlife #reallife #homeschool #sahm
Instagram post 18075154369146246 We are starting this rainy cold Friday with science experiments.
My son likes this Chemistry kit because it has a wide array of experiments. I like it because most of the materials are included.
Technically these experiments were on the lesson plan for earlier in the week, but life went off the rails a bit. Its okay though. We just jumped back in, cut out the fluff, and are almost caught up.

Instagram post 17865521854527908 Do you take the day off for Veterans Day? We do whatever our favorite veteran (aka my husband) does. This year he has the day off work so we have the day off school.
I'm so thankful for the long weekend. Last week was hard. We only had a bad cold, but it knocked all of us off our feet.
I'm hoping that by tomorrow we are all feeling 100% like ourselves.

Instagram post 17850901204674832 Boys book club day! I'm trying to help foster a love of reading in my son by hosting a monthly book club. They choose the book and I find a few activities.
This month we read the first book in the Hardy Boys series and solved our own CSI investigation.

Instagram post 18027222190241449 Today is voting day! I encourage you to bring your children with you when you go vote.
I want my kids to be contributing members of society and part of that is voting in elections . . . even 'small' local elections.
This book is a great way explain to little ones why we vote.

Instagram post 17924988622330233 A new month means a new writing prompt calendar! This one is available free from WriteShop - click my bio link to download your own copy. ✏️ I like to add a bit of color and then tape it to the dining room wall. That keeps it convenient for the kids anytime they need a little writing inspiration.

Instagram post 17989902127300986 How do you make school fun on Halloween? Include treats in the lessons!
We have been learning about the periodic table of elements so we chose a few elements to study. I didn't want tons of cookies in the house, so we only chose a few.
My kids will now remember each part of an element. I'm pretty sure they learn through their stomachs!

Instagram post 17910322786371747 We made candy atom models this morning 🍬 The kids are thinking about candy all week, so I might as well include it in my lesson plans.
Are you doing any thing fun in school today?

Instagram post 18078140098092649 I socialized my kids today! Why do people always seem to assume that homeschoolers stay holed up in their homes?
A few times a week we meet up with our amazing co-op. My kids are also active in the youth group at church. Add in errands and other random outings and we end up engaging *in person* with other kids at least 5 days a week.
Does the socialization myth drive anyone else crazy?
