BFG Activities – 6 Ways to Take The BFG to the Next Level

A few years ago, I spent a few lazy summer weeks reading The BFG by Roald Dahl and doing BFG activities with my children. The movie was set to release in theaters, and my kids were excited to see it on the big screen. We sat around in the warm summer sunshine, and I read aloud as my kids drew sidewalk art with chalk, ate juicy popsicles, and picked fresh produce from our little garden.
The BFG movie is now on Disney+, so I thought I would share a few BFG activities to go along with this childhood classic. After reading the book, give these BFG activities a try.
The BFG Activities
The BFG Dream Journals
As soon as we finished reading the book, I gave my kids dream journals. These journals are kept in their rooms and serve as a spot to write down their dreams each morning.
I gave my kids simple notebooks, but there are cute dream journals available. These dream journals have space to draw the dream, notate how they felt, and write a few sentences about what happened. This is a great way to sneak in a little writing practice for kids who do not naturally like to write.
I do not read the journals unless asked, so the kids are free to write their dreams with complete freedom and privacy.
Dream Drawing with Glitter Glue
In The BFG, dreams are described as swirly glittery orbs, so why not create your own sparkly dreams with glitter glue.
Kids can draw either actual dreams they have had or something they would like to dream. My kids have always enjoyed crafting with glitter glue. It isn’t an art supply that we use every day, so it feels special. Art is an excellent form of expression.

Start a Collection
The BFG collects dreams. If they don’t already have one, this is the perfect opportunity to start a collection. The collection can be anything that makes them happy – rocks, stamps, buttons, things shaped like hearts…literally anything that they like.
This seems to come naturally to children, so they will probably love the permission to hoard, I mean collect, their treasures. If space is an issue, set boundaries. This seems to work best if kids can see the limits. For example, the collection needs to fit on this shelf (or in this box, this drawer, etc.). If it is full, then something will need to be removed before something else can be added.
Watch The BFG Movie
Watching The BFG movie is the natural thing to do after reading the book. It is available to stream (currently on Disney +, but that could change) or on DVD.

My family loves to put our projector outside and hang our movie screen from hooks on the side of our house. We all snuggle under blankets and watch a movie on the big screen in the fresh open air. Sometimes we invite all of our neighbors and make it a neighborhood party.
The BFG is rated PG, so it is great for pretty much the whole family.
Make Frobscottle
This “sweet and jumbly” fizzy green drink is mentioned quite often in the book, so why not give it a try as one of your BFG activities. These versions are sure to delight your kids. What child can resist a drink made with ice cream?
Make Dream Catchers
The BFG catches dreams, so it makes sense to craft a beautiful dreamcatcher.
These dream catchers can be made to match any type of bedroom color scheme. The BFG uses a net to catch dreams, but I think paper plates, beads, and yarn are a little more child-friendly.
BFG Online Book Club
Literary Adventures for Kids offers a BFG virtual book club. This is a great option if you need something easy for parents, but useful for students. This online course takes about a month to complete and covers all of the traditional language arts topics.
