February Book Basket

Each month I put together a basket full of seasonally appropriate books. I do not assign these books to my kids. They are simply available in a cozy area of the house. More often than not, my kids do pick up a few of the books to read while they are relaxing. Changing the books each month keeps the selection fresh and new.
The topics I chose to include in my February book basket revolve around February holidays – both true holidays and cultural holidays. The holidays featured in the February book basket are:

Groundhog’s Day
Gregory’s Shadow by Don Freeman. Gregory is a shy groundhog. One day he ventures outside, but is separated from his shadow. Will they be reunited?
It’s Groundhog Day by Steven Kroll. Godfrey the groundhog is kidnapped just before Groundhog Day. What will happen if Godfrey isn’t able to predict the arrival of spring?
How Groundhog’s Garden Grew by Lynne Cherry. Squirrel teaches groundhog how to plant and tend to a garden. This book is perfect if you are beginning your garden by growing seeds indoors.
Superbowl
Family Huddle by Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, and Archie Manning. The Peyton boys love football and they love their family.
Valentine’s Day
The Day It Rained Hearts by Felicia Bond. Cornelia Augusta is caught in a heart-storm. What will she do with all of the hearts? How will she spread the love?
The Night Before Valentine’s Day by Natasha Wing. It is the night before Valentine’s Day and children all over town are preparing for a party in this rhyming tale.
I Spy: I Love You by Jean Marzollo. Each page of this I Spy book features a rhyme and items to find in the scene. Even pre-readers will enjoy this book because each item to find is illustrated. No reading skills necessary.
Biscuit’s Valentine’s Day by Alyssa Satin Capucilli. Biscuit is visiting all of his friends to deliver valentine cards.
The Valentine’s Bears by Eve Bunting. Mrs. Bear wakes up early to celebrate Valentine’s Day with her husband.
Puppy Love by Lisa Ann Marsoli. Clifford tries to figure out the definition of ‘love’.
Heart to Heart by George Shannon. Squirrel creates a truly personalized Valentine’s Day gift for his best friend, Mole.
Valentine’s Day Disaster by Geronimo Stilton. Geronimo is excited for Valentine’s Day until he opens up an empty mailbox on February 14th. Have his friends forgotten him?
President’s Day

Don’t feel like you need to rush out and buy multiple seasonal books to put together your own February book basket! Libraries are full of wonderful seasonally appropriate books. I recommend reserving them online a week or so before you want to pick them up so that they will be available for you.
