Themed Picture Books for April

April is a transition month here in Washington. I can see the march towards pretty spring-like weather. It is still raining most days, but not all day. Colorful signs of spring are appearing after a long grey winter. Our picture books for April reflect the transition to spring.
The increased sunshine means that my kids are spending more time outside. Ironically, they seem more inclined to choose books from the book basket when they have spent a lot of time outdoors. They come back inside to avoid getting soaked in the spring rain and choose a book to read while they wait for the shower to pass.
I do not require my children to read any of the books in our monthly book baskets. They are assigned plenty of quality books for school lessons. My book baskets are simply a collection of books I think my children might enjoy. The choices rotate monthly to keep up with seasonal interests.

Easter
We are celebrating with an epic Easter egg hunt this year. Our Washington “family” is coming over for lunch and a huge Easter egg hunt. We are planning to hide a few HUNDRED eggs. These books will help get Hannah and Ben in the Easter mood.

Chickens
We have been toying with the idea of backyard chickens for a little while now. Ben is even considering starting a business selling eggs. We want to make sure we understand the responsibilities fully before we make a decision, so we are reading lots of books about raising backyard chickens.

Butterflies
One of my favorite signs of spring is seeing butterflies return after their journey south. We are currently observing caterpillars and waiting for them to morph into butterflies. We might as well read up on the process while we wait.

Gardening
We planted our vegetable seeds and flowers a few weeks ago. The vegetables are growing almost daily and we are looking forward to nurturing them so they can nourish us. The flowers are adding some much needed color to our home.
