How to Host a Easter Poetry Teatime

Poetry teatime is a pretty common occurrence around my house. Most weeks we keep it pretty simple and low-key, but for special occasions we like to make it a little more, well, special. This month we are focusing on Easter poetry.
Easter is only two weeks away, so before we load up our u-boxes and move across the country, we decided to have our Easter poetry teatime a little early this year. We always use my fine wedding china for special tea with poetry celebrations. We need to squeeze this special poetry with tea in before the china cabinet gets packed up!
Our Easter poetry teatime was short and sweet, but it doesn’t take much time to make memories.

We went very light on the themed decor for this Easter tea with poetry. It was much more minimalistic than our traditional themed poetry teatimes.
Many years we have adorned our dining room table with egg-shaped candles, a chocolate bunny sculpture, and cute pastel Easter platters. This year I simply picked up a vinyl Easter bunnies tablecloth from Target and called it good.
I don’t think the kids even noticed that our usual decorations were already boxed up. They were just happy to celebrate.

Easter Poetry Teatime ~ Treats and Tea
I think the special tea and poetry treats are what bring my son to the table. He is more than happy to listen to the Easter poetry if he gets to eat delicious snacks!
I found a cute Wilton Easter bunny cupcake kit at the grocery store. It was definitely an impulse purchase but came in handy for our Easter poetry teatime.
We baked gluten-free coconut flour cupcakes right after breakfast and added white frosting and the little bunny feet and tails once they were cool. The kids helped bake and decorate. We can call that extra math, art, and home ec practice ;-).
The cupcake decorations were adorable, but rock hard, so if you use this specific cupcake topper, I recommend taking them off the cupcakes before actually eating the cupcakes.
I always keep individually wrapped tea bags in a small decorative basket. My children are allowed to choose any of the teas, as long as they are caffeine free. My kids have enough energy, they definitely don’t need any extra!
Normally I serve a few different treats at our poetry teatimes, but I kept it very simple this time.

I liked this poetry book because it contains a richer vocabulary than is typically found in children’s books. We discussed the new words and the poems themselves.
I always ask my kids what they think certain poems are describing. Then we talk about the mental pictures that the words painted.

Creating your own poetry is a great way to wrap up a tea party. Sometimes we work together to write a poem as a team. Other times we brainstorm alone and share our new poems.
