This year my daughter attended a Harry Potter class at our local homeschool co-op.  The students read every novel in the Harry Potter series.  The teacher guided them through literary concepts and essay writing as they dived deeper into the books.  I provided the class with a frequent supply of Sweet Harry Potter treats.

It was a pretty intense class…especially because my daughter was one of the youngest students.  She hung in there though and earned a reward for all of her hard work – The Unofficial Harry Potter Cookbook.

One of her favorite parts of the class was watching the movies.  After the class finished reading and discussing one of the books they watched the corresponding movie together.  The teacher provided pizza and children brought in snacks to share.   Over the year, I made quite a few Harry Potter treats for the class.

Sorting Hat Cupcakes

These Harry Potter themed treats are the perfect snack to accompany the Harry Potter movies.

These cupcakes came about when Hannah forgot to tell me that her class was watching a movie and needed one of my special Harry Potter treats the next day.  I really did not want to go to the grocery store, so I scrounged through my cabinets, searching for something festive to bake.

Luckily, I had everything I needed to make vanilla cupcakes and a few batches of colored frosting, which can easily be turned into sorting hat cupcakes.

You will need:

Immediately set half of the frosting aside.  This will stay white and go on top of the cupcakes.

Divide the remaining frosting into 4 small bowls.  Dye one bowl red, one green, one blue, and one yellow.

Create a small hole in each of the prepared cupcakes by scooping it out with a spoon (or melon baller, if you have one).

Pipe a bit of colored frosting into each cupcake hole.  I made 2 dozen cupcakes, so I filled 6 of each color.

Frost the top of the cupcakes, making sure to hide all of the interior colored frosting.

When kids bite into the cupcakes the sorting hat cupcakes reveal their house color:

  • Red = Gryffindor
  • Blue = Ravenclaw
  • Green = Slytherin
  • Yellow = Hufflepuff

Chocolate Frogs

Official Harry Potter chocolate frogs are a fun splurge every once in a while, but they are way too pricey for me to buy them for an entire class.  Instead, we made our own.  They are very easy to make.  You just need:

Melt the chocolate slowly.  Then pour it into the frog candy molds.  Tap the filled molds gently on the counter to remove air bubbles.

Put the molds into the freezer until the chocolate has solidified.  This usually takes 15-30 minutes.

Once the chocolate has hardened, you can carefully remove the chocolate from the mold and make another batch.

Owl Cupcakes

These Harry Potter themed treats are the perfect snack to accompany the Harry Potter movies.

Hedwig was the inspiration for this cupcake, although my son thought they looked more like turkeys than owls.  Either way, they are yummy.

You will need:

  • Baked and frosted cupcakes – any flavor
  • Oreos – any kind with a plain white center
  • M&Ms

Open up the Oreos so that you have two separate halves.  Make sure to pull the sides apart gently so you still have white frosting on each half.

Put the Oreo halves onto a frosted cupcake, side by side.  They will hang off the edge of the cupcake, but that is okay.

Place an M&M onto each Oreo half.  This will look like the pupil.

Harry Potter Sugar Cookies

These Harry Potter themed treats are the perfect snack to accompany the Harry Potter movies.

These Harry Potter cookies were such a hit that a few of the students took photos of them.

You will need:

  • Baked sugar cookie
  • White royal icing
  • Black royal icing
  • Red royal icing
  • Piping bags

Decorating cookies with royal icing takes a while, so be sure to leave yourself plenty of time…unless you want to decorate cookies at midnight like I did.  I don’t recommend that.  Also, don’t make all of the royal icing at the beginning.  Make it just before you need it.

Start by cover the top of the cookie with white icing.  I drew the outline with thicker royal icing and then flooded the center.  Set the cookies aside for a few hours while the icing sets.

Once the white icing has hardened, use a piping bag to draw Harry Potter glasses with the black royal icing.

Carefully use the red royal icing, in a piping bag, to draw a Harry Potter scar above the glasses.  Be careful not to bump the glasses.  Set the cookies aside for a few hours until the frosting has completely hardened.  When it is all completely hardened, you can stack the cookies without damaging the design.

This was by far the easiest of my Harry Potter treats.

You will need:

I just bought a big Costco size container of jelly beans and divided it up into disposable condiment cups.  It took almost no time at all..which is exactly what I need sometimes.
