Finished van Gogh art kit for kids project

My daughter has loved art from the time she was a preschooler, so I jumped at the opportunity to review the Master Kitz The Starry Night by Kidzaw.com.  This is a van Gogh art kit for kids.  The Master Kitz are a fantastic way to teach children about famous paintings.

The Master Kitz The Starry Night contains almost everything needed to create a personalized rendition of the famous The Starry Night painting.  I don’t know about you, but I am much more likely to do an art project if everything shows up at my door ready to go.

It includes:

  • 2 large sheets of paper
  • 3 small bottles of acrylic paint – black, blue, and white
  • Abstract star stickers
  • 4 Oil pastels
  • 1 textured paint roller
  • 1 smooth paint roller
  • Stencil
  • Instruction sheet

You will need to supply:

  • Tape (I used art tape to avoid tearing the paper)
  • Paper plate or paint palette

This van Gogh art kit for kids includes enough supplies for at least 2 art projects, but it is really easiest to create one at a time.  My daughter is my child most interested in art, so she and I created this artwork together first.  It was really a nice little opportunity for one-on-one time.  Normally she studies art through a class the local pottery shop offers to our homeschool co-op.  Working on an art project together was a nice change of pace. I know nothing about art, but this kit made it easy.

The instruction pamphlet (printed in multiple languages) includes a page about the life of Vincent van Gogh.  It is not much info, just enough to pique their interest if a child has no previous knowledge of the artist.  Hannah and I were surprised to read that van Gogh died at 37.  He looks so old in his self-portraits!

After reading about the artist we moved on to the main event – the van Gogh art kit for kids!

The directions provided excellent instruction while also explaining that they are just a guideline.  Making the project your own is encouraged!

I read the instructions aloud to my daughter, but I really think she could have completed the project on her own.

First, we prepared our dining room table by taping down a few large pieces of construction paper.  This made clean up very easy.  Then we taped down the large piece of white paper so that it wouldn’t shift while we were working. Next, Hannah placed the star stickers wherever she wanted on the top half of the paper.  After the stickers were all in place, Hannah began using the textured roller to add the first layer of blue paint. Next, she added in a little bit of white paint with the textured roller.

We carefully removed the stickers and let the paint dry for just a few minutes before taping the stencil in place.  The stickers pulled off pretty easily.  One tore a bit, but it is still usable, and more importantly, the artwork wasn’t damaged.

Once the stencil was in place, Hannah layered on black paint with the smooth roller.  We peeled the town scenery stencil off and let the paint dry.  It already looked awesome!

After the paint was 100% dry, Hannah used the oil pastels to color the stars and buildings.  This step really made the artwork pop!

It took about an hour, start to finish, to complete this project.

I added the painting to my office wall so I can see it daily, but it would also make a great grandparent gift if it was framed.

My family really enjoyed the Master Kitz The Starry Night.  The kids always enjoy painting and I enjoyed spending time with them one-on-one.  I think I might get a few more sets for gifts.
