September Book Basket For Kids

I like to have baskets of seasonal books available for my kids. I started collecting these books when I was a public school kindergarten teacher. In the same way I rotate art supplies, having a seasonal book rotation keeps books from becoming boring. The books in the September book basket are only available for a limited time, so there is a sense of urgency to read them.
We won’t necessarily read every single book in our September book basket. I do not assign these books. These books are merely on display as a way to entice my children to read. Often times they will pick one up just because it catches their eye as they are walking by or when they are relaxing in the living room.
I try to include chapter books whenever I can find them, but the book baskets tend to be primarily picture books. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
Picture books are short and easy to read. That characteristic can be appreciated if kids are already spending a large chunk of time each day immersed in a literature-rich curriculum. Besides, we are really never too old for a good picture book!

You don’t need to spend a fortune to build a seasonal book collection. Many of these books are borrowed from our local library. I just make sure to use these strategies to avoid any fines. Thrift stores and used book sales are inexpensive spots to find seasonal books.
