Wonder Crate ~ An Educational Subscription Box for Kids

I saw my first Wonder Crate in the Carolina Homeschool Conference vendor hall. It was pretty much love at first sight. These cute lunch boxes are packed with hands-on activities and good books. Two of my favorite things.
I love it even more when these things arrive in the mail 😉
Wonder Crate is a subscription box for kids ages 7 – 11. Every month children receive a box centered around a famous person and theme. The first Wonder Crate arrives in a cute reusable metal lunch box. Every box includes:
- a biography from the popular Who Was? series
- hands-on activities related to the theme
- an email with extra resources for the person or theme
Choose from the activists series, innovators series, or the artists series. The selections within each series all look fantastic. Don’t worry if you can’t decide on just one series. The combo membership option sends boxes from every series.

What was in my Wonder Crate box?
My kids were thrilled when our Wonder Crate showed up in the mailbox. I mean, who doesn’t love getting mail? Oh to be a kid again, when the only mail with your name on it is a letter from a friend, a magazine, or something to enjoy.
My kids are a tad on the older side for this subscription box, but that didn’t stop them from enjoying it. My son is 11 and my daughter is 14. True to their personalities, my son’s favorite part was the nonfiction biography and my daughter’s favorite was the craft activity.
Our box had a space theme. It was the Sally Ride kit from the innovators series.
It included:
- Who Was Sally Ride? by Megan Stine
- 4 constellation cards (Aries, Gemini, Perseus, and Cassiopeia)
- Blue pipe cleaners
- Glow in the dark star beads
- Star gazing observation log
- Space Rocks candy

How we used our Wonder Crate
Wonder Crate is a fantastic kit to let kids explore at their leisure. I set the materials on our dining room table as an invitation to play. After all, kids learn best through play.
The first thing they enjoyed was the candy 😉
They built constellations with the pipe cleaners and glow in the dark stars. I really like that they can take the beads off and either do the project again or use them in a craft of their creation.
I read bits and pieces of Who Was Sally Ride? to introduce my children to Sally Ride. They are old enough to read the book to themselves, but I wanted to pique their interest a bit. Reading a few select highlights encouraged them to pick the book up out of the living room book basket and continue the story.
We left for vacation shortly after receiving our box, so we packed our star gazing observation log. Our hope was to see the stars from the tranquility of the ocean. Unfortunately, the cruise ship put off too much light pollution. We couldn’t find a single deck dark enough to see the stars clearly. Instead, we will layout blankets in our back yard once we finally have nice weather.
