Apples are one of my favorite fall themes for young children. I like to include apple activities before we get into pumpkins, Halloween, and turkeys. It is even the first fall kindergarten book club I offer through my other business, Strong Foundations Homeschool. There are so many wonderful apple books for kids, whether you’re completing a full apple unit learning about how apples grow, talking about Johnny Appleseed, visiting an apple orchard, or looking for fun fall read-alouds.
As a former classroom kindergarten teacher and homeschool mom, I love incorporating literature into the day in any way possible. Books are a great addition to any unit study or lesson, but they can also be an effective way to help kids rest. I liked to read aloud during snack time because it helped the kids sit still and actually eat. These books work well for preschool and kindergarten.
I will organize the titles into nonfiction apple books and fiction apple books. My favorite apple books tend to be books that are both engaging and educational.

How Do Apples Grow? by Betsy Maestro is part of the Let’s Read and Find Out Science series, stage 2. Stage 2 books are intended for 5 – 9 year olds, but I think that preschoolers will be able to understand the book. Students will learn all about how apples grow, apple trees through the seasons, and apple flower fertilization.

Apples for Everyone by Jill Esbaum is a National Geographic for Kids science book. This is a great apple book option for young children because there are no more than a few sentences on each page. It provides a short overview of apples: they grow on trees and are harvested in the fall; they are used in recipes; they have seeds in the core; and there are many varieties.

Johnny Appleseed: A Little Golden Book Biography by Lori Haskins Houran introduces children to the life of Johnny Appleseed, the American pioneer whose real name was John Chapman. The book follows his travels across the American frontier as he planted apple trees and shared apple seeds with settlers. I like that it introduces the concept of a biography with a kid-friendly character.
This A is for apple craft would be a cute activity to pair with the book because it includes apple seeds.

The farmer teaches the family all about apples. Kids can learn about the different varieties of apples, how to pick apples, the parts of an apple, and how an apple tree grows. There is even a recipe for homemade applesauce and an apple print activity.

I like this book for kids who are going to help bake an apple pie. There is even an apple pie recipe in the back of the book.
