Fall is the perfect time of year to learn about apples. These apple activities for preschool and kindergarten combine great books and hands-on learning. I recently planned an apple-themed book club for preschoolers and kindergarteners that included a mix of apple books, science activities, apple crafts, and apple-themed fine motor activities. I am sharing all of the apple activities in this post so you can enjoy these activities with your own kids!
My apple storytime was limited to two hours, but I wish I had more time. I will share the books and favorite apple activities that I planned for my storytime, as well as the activities I would have included if I had more time. Gather a few favorite books and some apples, and get ready for a fun-filled morning of learning!

Apple Activities for Preschool and Kindergarten
You do not need to read all of the suggested books or complete all of the activities. Pick the books and activities that work for your family.
Apple Books
I chose three books for my apple storytime. It was a hard choice!
Apples, Apples, Apples by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace

Apples, Apples, Apples by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace is a cute picture book that follows a rabbit family as they go apple picking. They learn about different varieties of apples, how to pick apples, the parts of an apple, how apples grow, and how to make homemade applesauce.
Ten Apples Up On Top! by Dr. Seuss
Last update on 2026-10-22 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API
Ten Apples Up On Top! by Dr. Seuss is a silly book about animals trying to balance apples on their heads. The lion, tiger, and dog increase the number of apples on their heads while doing silly things like skating, hopping, and jump roping. This is a great story to include in your apple storytime if you want to incorporate math activities.
Amelia Bedelia’s First Apple Pie by Herman Parish

Amelia Bedelia’s First Apple Pie by Herman Parish is a cute story about Amelia Bedelia as a child. She is spending the day with her grandparents and wants to bake an apple pie. Before she can bake the pie with her grandmother, she needs to visit the apple orchard with her grandfather.
I was limited to three books due to time constraints, but if you have more time available, I recommend checking out more apple books for kids.
Apple Science
Examine an Apple
Preschool and kindergarten science activities always start with observation. I set out my set of kid-friendly magnifying glasses so kids could examine a whole apple and a sliced apple. Encourage them to find and identify the parts of an apple, including the apple seeds, stem, skin, and flesh.
Kids can also use their senses to describe the feel, appearance, scent, and taste of an apple. They can even compare different types of apples.
Apple Tree Through the Seasons
Young children might be surprised to learn that apple trees do not have ready-to-eat apples all the time. This activity is very simple and can work with crayons, colored pencils, or paint, depending on what you have available.
First, divide a piece of white paper into four equal sections and label them spring, summer, fall, and winter.
Next, have the children draw a tree trunk and branches in each section. You can also help them trace their arm and fingers to represent the tree trunks and branches.
Finally, decorate each tree to show the season: spring blossoms, green summer leaves, red apples and colorful fall leaves, and bare winter branches.
Apple Life Cycle
Kids can learn about the life cycle of apples with this cute apple life cycle wheel. Just color the pictures, cut out the circles, and connect them with a brass brad.

Apple Math
Count and Stack Apples
Instead of counting and stacking real apples, I created balloon apples. This is a bit easier and less frustrating for young children to stack.
To create the balloon apples, you will need:
- Red or green balloons – I used a mix
- Funnel
- Sand or rice – I used rice because I already had a huge bag from Costco in my pantry
Stretch out the balloon a bit to prepare it for the sand or rice. Then use the funnel to add the filler to the balloon. Tie the balloon once it has reached your desired size.
Apple Number Puzzles
Number puzzles are a fantastic way for young children to practice math skills such as putting numbers in order and skip counting. I used number puzzles all the time when I was a classroom kindergarten teacher.
The apple number puzzles that I purchased on Teachers Pay Teachers years ago don’t seem to be available now, but these are other great options.
Apple Pattern Blocks
Creating designs is a great way to use pattern blocks. These apple-theme pattern block cards are a perfect independent activity. I like to set the pattern blocks and laminated design cards on the table and see if kids can manipulate the pieces to create the design.
Apple Crafts
Create an Apple Star Print
Young children are delighted to learn that the seeds in an apple form a star. After they examine the cut apple, help them use the apple piece as a stamp to make apple prints. Popsicle sticks can act as handles, helping keep little hands clean.
Make an Apple Sun Catcher
An apple sun catcher is a cute apple craft that is easy for young children. You will need to cut the contact paper ahead of time. You can either cut the tissue paper or let your little one tear the paper into small pieces. Tearing paper is a great fine motor skill.

Apple Fine Motor Skills Ideas
Apple Crisp Sensory Bin
This apple sensory bin was quick and easy to put together. I included:
- Raw oatmeal as the base
- Red and green pom poms
- Measuring spoons
- Mixing spoons
- Mini cups
- Paper apples
Kids could stir, scoop, and fill the little containers with oatmeal and ‘apple’ pom poms.
Apple Play Dough
I set out a play dough tray with an apple theme using the guide from Early Learning Ideas.
Sort Apples
Sorting small items with tweezers is a great way to combine an early math skill with fine motor practice. Put pom poms in apple colors in a shallow container, like a pie plate, and let kids use kid tweezers to pick up each pom pom and sort them by color.
- Sufficient Quantity: there are 300 pieces of sorting fall decorations in diverse styles, including 100 pom poms, 200 pcs leaves for crafts, 10 sorting…
- Material and Size: the pompom balls decorations are made of acrylic yarn, and the average diameter of each one is about 2 cm/ 0.79 inches; The matching…
- Fine Motor Skills Development: these fine motor games can be applied to improve your kid’s sorting and counting skills, as well as color cognitive ability…

Apple Tracing
I included tracing mats in my collection of apple activities because it is an easy way for children to practice pencil grip. All you need to do is print and laminate the tracing mat and give your child a dry-erase marker. I suggest watching for pencil grip and correcting it if necessary.
I hope these fun apple activities help you enjoy this fun fall theme with your little learners!
