My daughter is obsessed with Hamilton right now. I can’t really blame her. I’m pretty obsessed too. We watched the musical for the first time on the 4th of July and have watched it probably at least 5 times since then.
Over the years, we have spent quite a bit of time studying American history. I think that is just what happens when you live in Virginia. We could make day trips to Washington DC, Mount Vernon, Colonial Williamsburg, and Monticello.
When I noticed that my daughter was once again interested in American history, I compiled this list of resources about Alexander Hamilton for kids. I am hoping that we can go on a Hamilton-themed field trip, but the books and videos will be helpful even if we can’t get out and explore.

Reading is a great way to explore Alexander Hamilton for kids.
These picture and chapter books about Alexander Hamilton and Eliza Hamilton are for kids of all ages. Often we think that older kids should stick to novels, but it isn’t always true.
Sure, my middle and high school students read novels for their literature courses, but picture books are a quick way to get a lot of information. This can also be a great way to pique interest in a topic.
I plan to display these books on a side table in my living room. I frequently rotate those books because I find my kids picking one up to read pretty often.

This short book manages to cover a ton of facts about Alexander Hamilton for kids. In just 29 pages, the book explains Alexander Hamilton’s childhood, his role in the Revolutionary War, the Constitutional Convention, his job as the first Secretary of the Treasury, the Whiskey Rebellion, and the infamous duel with Alexander Burr.
The illustrations are bold, crisp, and lovely.

Field trips are always a fun addition to any lesson plan. These field trips are fantastic ways to make Alexander Hamilton for kids interesting.
Be sure to check the location website to research any possible closings. Closures seem to change pretty quickly due to COVID precautions.
Yorktown Battlefield (Yorktown, VA)
The Yorktown Battlefield is the actual site of the Battle of Yorktown during the Revolutionary War. Alexander Hamilton was one of the commanding officers during the final battle of the war.
American Revolution Museum (Yorktown, VA)
The American Revolution Museum offers visitors a hands-on approach to learning American history. Visitors can help dip candles, ladle water onto the crops, tour a Revolutionary War-era farmhouse, and hold cannons in the war encampment.
My family visited this living museum a few years ago and really enjoyed our tour.
Hamilton Gravestone (Manhattan, NY and virtual)
Alexander Hamilton is buried in the churchyard of Trinity Church on Wall Street in Manhattan, New York. The cemetery is open to the public.
Not in New York? That is okay! The cemetery can also be toured virtually.
Hamilton Grange (New York, NY)
The Hamilton Grange, aka the Hamilton country home, is now a National Park. In the musical, there is a line where Hamilton says they will get a ‘little place in Harlem’. This makes me laugh after seeing the home. 1) I don’t think of Harlem as part of the countryside, but I guess it was in 1802. 2) The house is hardly little, at least by my 2020 standards.
Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site (Albany, NY)
The Schuyler Mansion is now a State Historic Site Park. Elizabeth Schuyler was raised in this beautiful home. It was also where she married Alexander Hamilton.
Visitors can participate in guided tours of the mansion as well as special programs.
Hamilton Videos
Some kids learn best through observing, so these videos are a great way to teach Alexander Hamilton for kids.

Liberty Kids tells the story of America’s fight for independence in cartoon format.
I suspect that any child who is fascinated with Hamilton will love watching Liberty Kids. Each episode is only 23 minutes, making it a good choice for kids with short attention spans.
BrainPOP is a quality resource, but it can get pricey. However, this Alexander Hamilton for kids website seems to currently be free.

Watching the official Hamilton musical can be a fun family activity. My daughter and I have watched it multiple times. We walk around the house humming the songs. It isn’t all just fun, though. We frequently find ourselves doing a little research to see which parts of the play were accurate, which were embellished, and which were complete fiction.
