I love when we can make learning fun. Play-based learning is effective because kids are enjoying what they are doing. I really believe that kids will spend longer amounts of time focused on an activity, and therefore learning, if they are having fun. These astronomy games are a fun way to learn.
These astronomy games can be used in a couple of ways:
- As part of a solar system unit study
- To weave in other subjects for kids who are obsessed with space
- As brain break activities throughout the day
- Screen time with an interactive game you can feel good about

Online Astronomy Games
NASA offers a treasure trove of amazing space education resources for kids. Their play area has games about:
- Building space ships
- Exploring Mars
- Nuclear fusion in the Sun
- Deep space network
They also link to quite a few other online astronomy games where kids can do things like discover space volcanos, investigate space forensics, and learn about the planets.
If you only check out one website about outer space, make it this one! I feel pretty confident you will find at least one interactive astronomy game that fits your needs.

- Multiplication Space Race (multiplication)
- Orbital Order

This game is incredibly simple, but it is still fun. Kids add planets, stars, and moons to a solar system. It is interesting to see how each addition changes the orbits. The goal is to avoid having your solar system items swallowed by the black hole.

Starlink (not to be confused with the internet service or the video game) is a fun addition to any astronomy unit study.
Constellations are frequently one of the things kids like best when studying the solar system and that is the focus of this game. Players can make known constellations and make their own new designs by connecting stars in the night sky.
