Ice cream and summer go together perfectly, so I knew I wanted to include a book about ice cream in my book-based summer activities for kids series. Curious George and the Ice Cream Surprise was a natural choice because kids always seem to love this silly monkey.
In this Margret & H. A. Rey’s book, the mischievous monkey is looking for a way to cool off. It is summertime and the temperatures are sweltering. He hears the music of an ice cream truck but unfortunately misses it. He tries to go swimming, drink cold lemonade, and run through the sprinkler. Unfortunately, something always goes wrong.
Eventually George is able to get a sweet treat for himself . . . and the rest of the town.

Help the Monkeys Game
A monkey is the star of Curious George and the Ice Cream Surprise, so a help the monkeys game is a great way to practice language arts skills. This free printable will help elementary age kiddos count syllables.
Print out the pages, available in color or black and white, and then cut on the dotted lines. Kids will sort the picture cards according to the number of syllables.
Create a New Ice Cream Flavor
Curious George and the Ice Cream Surprise got me thinking about ice cream and I bet I’m not alone. Rather than just buying ice cream from the grocery store, let’s try making ice cream.
One of the advantages of making our own ice cream is that we can create new combinations. Encourage your kids to brainstorm new possible creations. Some of their favorite foods might serve as inspiration.
I use my ice cream maker a few times a year, but it is possible to make ice cream at home using a mixer and a glass dish.
Run Through the Sprinkler
George tries to go to the neighborhood pool and finds it closed for renovations. Then he tries to run through the sprinkler with his friends, but the water turns off.
If your kids are anything like mine were, they will not want to miss any opportunity to run through the sprinkler. The sprinkler was one of my favorite ways to cool the kids off on days when I couldn’t dedicate a few hours to the pool.
Make Chocolate Covered Bananas
At the end of Curious George and the Ice Cream Surprise George finally gets his treat – a chocolate covered banana. We can make chocolate covered bananas too!
I like to keep a batch of chocolate covered bananas in my freezer during the hottest months in North Carolina. My kids frequently choose it as a quick breakfast. They like them because they are delicious. I like them because they are reasonably healthy.
Making chocolate covered bananas is super simple. You will need:
- Bananas
- Chocolate chips
- Toppings – chopped nuts, sprinkles, shredded coconut, etc. (optional)
- Popsicle sticks
- Cookie sheet
- Parchment paper
- Freezer
First, prepare the space. Make sure you have room in your freezer for the cookie sheet to lay flat. Top the cookie sheet with parchment paper.
Next, get the ingredients ready. Peel the bananas and break them in half. Melt the chocolate chips.
Now, Gently insert a popsicle stick into the center of the banana, leaving enough room for kids to hold the stick.
Dip the banana section into chocolate. If the bananas are hard to work with, drizzle on the melted chocolate.
Sprinkle on the toppings of your choice and then place the bananas on the parchment paper.
Freeze the chocolate covered bananas for a few hours, until they are firm. I like to store them in a reusable plastic freezer bag.
Banana Splits Game
Take advantage of your child’s interest in ice cream and use it as an opportunity to practice reading compound words.
This free printable game is easy to play. Just print out the pages and cut on the lines. I recommend printing the pages on cardstock to make them a little more durable. This activity can be added to a language arts center at home or pulled out when you need a quick educational activity.
