I’m a big believer in the educational power of field trips. It is one of my favorite teaching techniques! We try to go on a field trip every month. Thankfully, there are so many field trip opportunities for homeschoolers. This field trip scavenger hunt bundle helps keep kids engaged while exploring and learning.
I love to take my children on field trips. The freedom to take as many field trips as I can fit in my budget is one of my favorite parts of homeschooling. We are making family memories while learning. Field trips offer multiple benefits:
- A chance to talk to experts at work
- Visual learners can see 3-D exhibits
- Kinesthetic learners get a chance to touch through hands-on exhibits
- Students are introduced to new material that can pique their interest
- A chance to be social – especially if you bring a few friends along (and we know how worried everyone is about homeschool socialization 😉)
- Get out of the house – sometimes a change of scenery improves moods
Sometimes there is so much to see on field trips that my kids need a little help focusing. That is where my field trip scavenger hunt bundle comes into play.
Field Trip Scavenger Hunt Bundle
I print out a copy of this field trip scavenger hunt bundle pretty much every time we go on a field trip. The bundle includes several scavenger hunts and field trip reviews.
The scavenger hunt lists things for students to find in each location. Every historical site, zoo, aquarium, and art museum is different, so the items are intentionally vague. This increases the chances of checking every box of the scavenger hunt. For example, your zoo might not have a chameleon, but I’m pretty sure it has an animal that uses camouflage.

Reflecting on the trip is an important part of the learning experience, so the field trip scavenger hunt bundle also includes two field trip review pages. One page includes space for pictures, and another includes lines for writing. This gives you the flexibility to differentiate the assignment for different ages and ability levels.
How My Family Uses the Field Trip Scavenger Hunt Bundle
The Night Before
I print out 2 copies (one for each child) of the appropriate scavenger hunt the night before our field trip. I put them on clipboards and stick them in my favorite field trip bag.
During the Field Trip
My kids like to each manage their own scavenger hunts even though we stay together. Typically, they check off items at the same time, but not always. For example, at the zoo, they might each choose a different animal for the carnivore tag. Generally, they hold their clipboards and pencils as we explore, but they put them back in the field trip bag if they need their hands free.
I don’t offer a prize for completing the scavenger hunt because my kids are motivated enough by checking off items on their list. They are like their mama in that they like checking off tasks on a list.
After the Field Trip
After the field trip, generally the next school day, my kids fill in the field trip review page. We talk about what we saw, our favorite parts, what we hope to see next time, and anything new we learned. This page can be useful if you live in a state where you need to keep a homeschool portfolio.
