Ben is starting 4th grade this year, so it is time for me to put together his 4th grade homeschool curriculum. I don’t know why, but 4th grade feels so much older than 3rd grade. Who knew kids grow up so fast?

When my kids were little it seemed like we had all the time in the world together. Now my kids are in 4th and 7th grade. Time went by so fast! I’m starting to realize that these kids are going to be out of my house well before I’m ready for it.

We might as well make the most of our time together by having a great school year.

I created this 4th grade homeschool curriculum to best suit my son’s personality and learning style. He is a high energy kid who learns best through watching videos and doing projects. He does not stop moving.

The wonderful thing about homeschooling is that I can pick and choose curriculums to meet his needs. This is a lifestyle that encourages tailor-made lessons.

4th Grade Homeschool Curriculum

This 4th grade curriculum is perfect for homeschool students. I think my son will have a lot of fun with these classes.

Language Arts

Reading

Every year I create a personalized book list for my kids. Ben is a child that does not naturally enjoy reading, but I am working to change that. I try to select books that have a big ‘hook’ so he wants to read them.

Spelling

All About Spelling was instrumental in breaking out of the invented spelling stage so I am including it in our 4th grade homeschool curriculum. Ben is a naturally curious kid and he always wants to know why certain words are spelled the way they are.

All About Spelling is teaching him all of the spelling rules. Knowing the rules answers his questions and helps him spell new words correctly. I expect we will complete books 2 and 3 this year.

Writing

This year we are giving WriteShop a try. I like that it provides a good mix of guided instruction while still honoring a child’s natural creativity. We will cover topics such as narrowing a broad topic to a narrow topic, choosing strong words, and writing with emotion while also exploring different styles of writing.

I plan to finish the WriteShop Junior Book D Set in one school year by working only 3 days a week.

“Working” on writing only 3 days a week leaves us plenty of time for fun activities like tea with poetry or writer’s workshop.

I’m still waiting for our WriteShop order to arrive and I can not wait to dig into it.

Grammar

We are switching up our grammar curriculum this year and giving Easy Grammar, Grade 4 a try as part of the 4th grade homeschool curriculum. Easy Grammar has a unique approach to teaching grammar. They introduce prepositions first, which makes it easier to break apart the parts of a sentence.

This book is HUGE – over 500 pages! It includes the teacher instructions, student worksheets, test pages, and answer key all in one place.

Math

Ben has used Khan Academy for his math curriculum for the past few years. He responds very well to the challenge of increasing his mastery percentage. The video and quiz format is perfect for him so I don’t see a reason to switch. If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.

He is also enrolled in a Games, Puzzles, and Logic class at co-op. Ben loves logic puzzles so I think this class will be a good fit for him. It will be the perfect addition to his 4th grade homeschool curriculum. He enjoys number games and just playing with numbers in general. He gets that from his dad, who minored in math in college.

History

We have been steadily working our way through Story of the World and are now up to volume 4. It just happens that we are on volume 4 while working on a 4th grade homeschool curriculum – the volume does not coordinate with the grade level. The amount of information crammed into this book is staggering, so we are going to take our time and only work through half of the book this year.

This year we will learn about the western expansion of the United States, the Civil War, and World War I. It will certainly keep us busy!

I like to include projects in our history lessons so we will be using the Story of the World Activity book too. This book saves me so much time because every chapter includes activities and discussion questions.

Science

I suspect that this will be the last year I teach Ben and Hannah science together. Next year Hannah will move on to high school science, and Ben isn’t there yet (of course, he will still be in elementary school).

This year we are using the Logos Press NOEO Physics curriculum. The box full of goodies already arrived and I can’t wait to start reading the books and performing the experiments. Every NOEO curriculum includes materials for experiments, but this box contained more experiments than usual.

More experiments = more fun = more learning.

Geography

Geography is another area where I am happiest piecing together my own curriculum. Honestly, there are so many countries and fun opportunities that geography should never be boring.

We alternate world geography and United States geography and last year we studied world geography at co-op. That means US geography is on tap this year.

It will be a fun year full of cooking recipes from Eat Your Way Through the USA, coloring in USA coloring books, and working through some of the USA Activity Bundle. Maybe I can even squeeze in a field trip to another state or two.
