One of the first things to decide when choosing a homeschool curriculum is whether you are interested in a religious or secular homeschool curriculum.
What is a secular homeschool curriculum?
A secular homeschool curriculum is a curriculum that does not promote any religion. Religions might be mentioned from a historical perspective, but no one religion is promoted as being better than another. There are no Bible verses or religious instruction. A secular homeschool curriculum also teaches evolution where appropriate in science courses.
What is a neutral curriculum?
A neutral curriculum also does not promote any religion. The main difference between a secular curriculum and a neutral curriculum can be found in science courses. A neutral curriculum does not teach creation or evolution.
How do I personally homeschool?
Personally, I am a secular homeschooler. My family happens to be religious, but I almost always choose a secular homeschool curriculum. I have never found a religious curriculum that aligns perfectly with our ELCA Lutheran religious beliefs.
Rather than use a religious curriculum and remove the parts that don’t match up, I choose to use secular homeschool curricula and add in religion. This is the best choice for my family.
As a homeschool teacher for 15 years and mother of two homeschool graduates, I am proof that you can successfully homeschool with secular homeschool curriculum options.
There are many religious options available. However, it can be a little tricky to find options for secular homeschoolers. I have researched the options repeatedly over my family’s years of homeschooling and decided to compile all of the best secular homeschool curriculum options in one place.

Elementary and Middle School Secular Homeschool Curriculum
Elementary All-In-One
These secular homeschool curriculum options can generally be used as all-in-one options. That means that lessons are interconnected to teach most of the core subjects together. Sometimes a separate math curriculum is necessary.
Pre-K – 5th
Blossom and Root is a nature-based secular homeschool curriculum for preschool – 5th grade. The curriculum is digital, which is handy when you need a curriculum immediately. No need to wait for shipping.
I have not used Blossom and Root, but it appears to be a gentle way to teach elementary school. The plans are rich in nature, literature, and hands-on activities.
Not every subject is included in every grade. All levels will require you to add a math curriculum, and some are lacking a history curriculum. Be sure to read the description carefully so you know exactly what is included.
Pre-K – 12th
Oak Meadow offers two plans – joining their ‘school’ or buying individual courses. It is important to know that registering as a student in the Oak Meadow online school may qualify you as a private school student, not a homeschool student.
Every state is different, so be sure to double-check to make sure you are following the correct set of laws.
I’m only going to touch on the independent homeschool option.
Oak Meadow K – 8 offers a complete secular homeschool curriculum. Every core subject is included each year:

Explode the Code teaches phonics in a systematic and sequential manner.
Pre-K – 12th

In about 20 minutes a day, your child can learn to apply the spelling rules to new words.

WriteShop is a secular homeschool curriculum that gently guides students through the writing process. The elementary and middle school levels include hands-on activities and games to keep interest high.
The teacher’s guide makes it easy to teach a variety of writing genres. I usually spend about an hour over the summer getting the curriculum organized so that everything is ready to go for the rest of the year.
Some of the older editions ask kids to use language that is edifying to the Lord, but that language is completely removed in the new volumes. We just skipped over that in the old versions, but if that would bother you, be sure to stick to the newest edition for a fully secular homeschool curriculum.

Brave Writer is a relaxed writing program that encourages a gentle and encouraging approach to teaching. There are online classes available as well as curriculum guides for teaching at home.
This secular homeschool curriculum meets students wherever they are and teaches them to enjoy writing.
6th – 8th
The Giggly Guide to Grammar will keep the attention of any student who likes gross or silly humor. It helped my 6th-grade son focus on grammar. This is definitely not a boring grammar curriculum!

Grammar Galaxy is a secular homeschool curriculum option that focuses on grammar but also touches on other language arts skills. This program uses a story to teach grammar concepts.
Elementary Secular Math Curriculum
Please note that not every math curriculum follows the same scope and sequence. Using curriculum placement tests will help you purchase the appropriate level. This holds true for Christian publishers, too.
K – Calculus
Math U See teaches through math videos, hands-on manipulatives, practice problems, and review work.
The video teaches each lesson, and parents provide support as the students work through the problems.
While Math U See is secular, the parent company, Demme Learning, is religious. I have used the Math U See math curriculum with my daughter for a few years now and have never seen any sort of religion or faith presented in the math lessons.
K – Algebra 2
Saxon Math is a secular math curriculum. It uses a spiral approach to encourage frequent review. The manipulative kit will help students work through the problems.
Pre-K – 8th
Shiller Math uses a Montessori approach to teaching math. The kits include everything you need to teach several grade levels of math.
This secular homeschool curriculum includes plenty of hands-on learning opportunities.
K – Calculus
Right Start Math is different from other math curricula because it uses a specially designed abacus. The abacus acts as a visual and kinesthetic learning tool.
Mastery is encouraged by teaching students to fully understand the concepts. Memorizing math facts is only a small part of this curriculum.
1st – Calculus
Life of Fred teaches math concepts through silly stories. There are a few practice problems right in the storybook.
Students need to think through the storyline to figure out how to solve the problems. This is not a textbook that provides step-by-step instructions.
1st – 7th
Math Mammoth teaches math mastery through a variety of methods. Students will use visual models, practice exercises, and mental math.
The printable curriculum includes student workbooks, answer keys, tests, reviews, and links to supplemental videos and online games.
My daughter was a fan of Math Mammoth and used it until she completed all of the levels.

3rd – Pre-calculus
Teaching Textbooks is an online math curriculum. It is designed to be used independently, so it is a practical choice for many families. The grading is automatic, but parents have the ability to turn off/on hints and second chances.
K – 12th
CTC Math is an online math curriculum that provides video instruction and digital worksheets.
Pre-K – 8th
Singapore Math was originally created for use in Singapore schools but is now available around the world. Singapore is currently ranked #1 in math, science, and reading, while America is ranked #18. Test scores are not a perfect comparison across countries, but I did find it interesting.
The Singapore Math curriculum consists of a teacher’s guide, textbook, and student workbooks. This is a rigorous math curriculum that really challenges how well students understand math concepts, not just memorize facts.
3rd – 12th
Aleks is an online math curriculum from McGraw-Hill, a textbook publisher. Aleks is 100% online with no textbook required.
This program works by using artificial intelligence and data from your student. It uses this information to determine the best time to introduce, teach, and review math concepts for maximum retention.

K – 6th
Math with Confidence is a secular elementary math curriculum that features short lessons, hands-on activities, and picture book recommendations. The open-and-go lessons are easy to teach, and kids seem to enjoy the lessons.

Real Science Odyssey is a secular science curriculum by Pandia Press. Students read about scientific concepts and then work through hands-on activities and projects. Topics include:

Elementary

There is a bit of overlap in companies that provide secular homeschool curricula to elementary ages AND high school. I went ahead and listed the high school options here, even if they are listed above, for ease of use.
I know that when I am looking for secular high school curriculum options, I don’t want to have to weed through the curriculum that is too young.
All-In-One Curriculum
Build Your Library is available as a secular homeschool curriculum for high school in addition to the earlier grades.
This literature-rich curriculum ties together language arts, history, science, and electives. Teaching in this way allows you to deeply explore topics because you are seeing them from multiple angles.

Secular High School Language Arts Curriculum

This secular homeschool curriculum can be used as a full year of high school English or as an elective.
Over the course of the school year, students will watch 17 movies as they learn literary elements. Every movie includes opportunities for discussion and a writing assignment. There are also extended learning activities suggested.

WriteShop offers a writing curriculum for high school students. There are two levels, but the teacher’s guide works for both levels. I love that there is one less book to buy.
WriteShop I and II teach students various writing formats in a low-stress way. The teacher’s guide offers a few schedule options, but you can spend as much time on each lesson as necessary.
*Note – The latest version of WriteShop (edition 5) is secular. Earlier editions reference God and include Bible verses.
The Brave Writer course Eavesdropping on the Great Conversations is designed for high school students. This secular curriculum helps teens develop the ability to form a well-crafted argument and turn it into an expository essay.
This program also includes copy work, dictation, and literature, making it a complete language arts curriculum.
Brave Writer also offers online classes. These classes are taught by teachers who are published authors and homeschoolers. My daughter used Math U See this past year for Algebra I, and I really like the way it was laid out. The teacher’s guide shows the work for every practice problem and test question. Being able to see the solutions was very helpful.
As I mentioned in the elementary section, Math U See is a secular math curriculum, but the parent company does include a section on faith formation. My daughter has used this curriculum for the past several years, and we have not noticed any references to religion or faith.
Mr. D Math offers high school-level math courses through online live classes or through self-paced study.
The online live classes meet 1 – 2 times each week in an interactive virtual classroom. Students also have access to video-based lessons for each chapter, practice problems, chapter tests, and semester exams.
The self-paced courses have everything that is included in the live classes EXCEPT the weekly live classroom experiences.
Saxon Math is an incremental math curriculum. The material slowly builds upon previous knowledge, and there are plenty of review opportunities.
Teaching Textbooks 3.0 is an online math program that goes through pre-calculus. The online program does all of the teaching, but parents can log in and access grades and settings. The settings can be adjusted to allow/prevent hints and second chances.
Thinkwell Homeschool math courses are all offered online. The courses cover Algebra – Trigonometry. Honors classes are also available.
Each lesson begins with a video explanation and is followed by practice problems that are automatically graded.
CTC Math high school courses follow the typical secondary sequence, Algebra – Calculus.

Life of Fred Math teaches traditional high school courses through stories. The suggested course order is slightly different than most curricula. Life of Fred recommends completing Algebra 1 and 2 before moving on to Geometry.

Secular High School Science
I created my own program to cover anatomy when I couldn’t find any other secular resources that looked interesting for my daughter. It combines interesting books, workbook pages, short and sweet videos, and hands-on lab activities to teach human anatomy and physiology.
Kristin Moon Science always puts out truly amazing science labs. The labs are designed to work with any curriculum and add a lab credit to your biology course.
After enrolling in the course, you will receive access to 30 lab videos, printable lab sheets, printable directions, and supply lists. The information is all well organized. Students follow along with Dr. Moon as they work through the experiments together.
This chemistry lab course is amazing. It is made to complement any chemistry curriculum and is an excellent way to add lab credit to a science course.
My daughter used this course last year, and it was an excellent lab course. It helped her better understand the concepts she was reading about in her textbook.
Kristin Moon Science offers a self-paced online microbiology course. This course is intended to introduce high school students to the fascinating world of microbiology. Dr. Moon has degrees in microbiology and molecular genetics.

Miller & Levine is a public school biology curriculum. There is a student textbook, teacher guide, lab manual, and student workbook available.
There are not very many high school-level secular homeschool curriculum science options, so I branched out to a traditional textbook for my daughter. I put together a secular biology plan that uses this book as the spine and adds in additional lab experiments, hands-on activities, and videos. Sometimes, public schools have sales where they sell off their ‘outdated’ curriculum very inexpensively.
Taylor Made Science offers live honors and AP-level science high school courses online. The classes are held on Zoom and include instruction, discussion, and hands-on labs. A lab kit is mailed to your home, making the labs convenient.
