A Math Mammoth Review

Hannah has used Math Mammoth for a while as her homeschool math curriculum. It really helped her boost her math proficiency, so I was very excited about the opportunity to do this Math Mammoth review with Ben. This is one of my favorite homeschool math curricula because it works so well for our family.

Ben has been working through the Math Mammoth Blue Series Multiplication 1 book. I have the Math Mammoth Blue Series Division 1 book waiting for him, but I want him to complete the Multiplication book first.

Math Mammoth is a homeschool math curriculum written by a math teacher turned homeschool mom. The books are available instantly by download, but many are also available as printed books.  

I like being able to download the books because then I have the books immediately after making my purchase. You know those times that you realize you need the next level of a curriculum (or a new curriculum altogether) at 11 pm? Just print, hole punch, stick it in a binder, and you are ready to get started in the morning.

One of the things I love about Math Mammoth is that there are multiple options so you can choose the homeschool math option that will work best for your family. You can choose either the blue series or the light blue series.

The Blue Series offers books by topic. This lets you choose just what you need. It is a great way to really focus on a particular math topic or skill. This is a great option for public school families that need a little extra instruction and practice with a specific topic. 

The Light Blue Series offers complete math curricula for grades 1-7. We have used this with Hannah for the past two years and have really liked the approach.

This Math Mammoth review is all about my experience using the Blue Series with my son. However, I have used the light blue series with my daughter for years.

For this Math Mammoth review, I chose the Multiplication 1 and Division 1 workbooks for Ben because he needs to master these subjects before moving on to more complicated math work. These seem to be sticking points for a lot of kids. Kids need to understand the concept of multiplication and memorize the facts.

The Math Mammoth Multiplication 1 workbook does a fantastic job of explaining the purpose of multiplication and breaking it down into simple, easy-to-understand steps. The book starts with the basics – creating groups with pictures.  

If your child is a kinesthetic learner, you could even do this step with small objects like beans, pennies, or our favorite math manipulative – chocolate chips.

My Math Mammoth Review

Ben works in his Math Mammoth workbook for about 20-25 minutes 4 days a week. I sit next to him to keep him on track, making sure he understands the directions, and to quiz him on the math facts. The lessons are pretty clear, though, so he doesn’t need much help from me.

This plan is really working for him. He is not only improving on his memorization skills, but he truly understands the concept of multiplication. Math Mammoth Multiplication 1 gave him the tools to figure out the answers to facts he hasn’t memorized yet.

After I finish teaching math to Ben, I move on to teaching math to Hannah. While I am teaching Hannah, Ben is still technically working on math, though, because Math Mammoth includes pages of website recommendations with multiplication games!  

The games are a great way to spend a little extra time practicing facts in a fun way. I love that these games are listed right in the workbook so I don’t need to spend any extra time researching appropriate online games.

The Math Mammoth Division 1 workbook is the logical next step after Multiplication 1.  

It also includes a list of online division games to review skills. It includes many of the same style of problems – picture problems, word problems, division facts, and review.  

Hannah has borrowed Ben’s Math Mammoth Division 1 book a few times to practice her division fact speed. I expect that Ben will fly through this level as soon as he completes the Multiplication book.

Math Mammoth Review Tips

  • Take the free math assessment to determine which grade level is best for your student. Every math curriculum is different and puts skills in a different order.
  • Move at your student’s pace. It is okay to skip a page or two if your child has 100% mastered that skill. We skipped the Multiplying by Zero page because Ben has never gotten a zero math fact wrong.
  • Print in black and white to save ink. The color is nice and visually appealing, but the lessons do not suffer without it.
