End of the Homeschool Year Checklist

The end of the homeschool year is a busy and exhausting time. I love homeschooling but always look forward to our summer break. Homeschooling planning and teaching always takes up quite a bit of my day so it is nice to have a little more wiggle room in my schedule.
Before rushing into summer break, I try to wrap up our homeschool year. It is a nice productive feeling to begin our summer without homeschool tasks hanging over my head. It also makes it easier to start the new school year in the fall.
These are the tasks on my end of the homeschool year checklist.
End of the Homeschool Year Checklist
1. Update your high schooler’s transcript
All high schoolers need a transcript. Even if they don’t plan to go to college, make a transcript. This is one of your responsibilities as the administrator for your homeschool.
Plans can change at any time. It is easier to create a transcript as you go rather than try to remember all of the courses and grades years later.
At the end of every homeschool year, I update my teens’ transcripts.
Transcripts do not need to be complicated, and you do not need to pay for a transcript service. I made my teens’ transcripts in Google Docs. Update the transcript with the courses taken, the grade earned, and the amount of credit for the course (usually 0.5 or 1.0).
2. Take any required tests
Some states require homeschoolers to take an annual standardized test. If your state has this requirement, make sure to get it done. Be aware of any testing deadlines for your state. End of year is a busy time for testing services, so plan ahead.
If your state does not have this requirement, you can skip this step.
3. Submit any required paperwork
If your state requires paperwork to be submitted at the end of the school year, don’t forget to submit it.
When I homeschooled in Virginia, we were required to submit our test results every year by a certain date. I always mailed it through certified mail so that I had proof that I mailed it on time, just in case it was lost.
4. Sort through the used curriculum
The end of the homeschool year is a great time to look through all of your used curricula. Save your favorites for younger children, but get the rest out of your house. If you won’t use it again, there is no need for it to take up room. You can sell it, donate it, or pass it on to another homeschool family.
5. Sign up for fall activities
Homeschool co-ops, enrichment classes, and activities can fill up quickly. In order to get the schedule you want, sign up for fall activities as soon as possible.
It is easy to want to sign up for everything, so be sure to be realistic about what your family can reasonably do at one time.
