Many families are wrapping up their homeschool year in June, but that doesn’t mean we can’t keep learning while having fun in the summer months! As a side note, I can’t believe my high school senior is graduating this June! Our homeschooling journey went way too fast.
These special days are an excellent way to sneak in a little educational fun. Homeschool families can make anything educational!
Awesome June Homeschool Activities
National Zoo and Aquarium Month – June is National Zoo and Aquarium Month. This is an excellent time to visit a local zoo or aquarium. Sometimes visiting in person just isn’t possible though. Thankfully, many zoos and aquariums have their exhibits online!
Visiting a zoo or aquarium virtually can be a great choice:
- No traffic or parking headaches
- Visit zoos and aquariums around the country
- Check out just the exhibits you want to see
- You don’t have to pack a bag full of snacks, sunscreen, water bottles, etc
- They are FREE
I researched all United States zoos and aquariums to find the ones offering free virtual exhibits.

National Ocean Month – June is National Ocean Month. This is an opportunity to learn about the fascinating ocean life while also thinking of ways we can protect our oceans from pollution.
There are a few educational and fun ways to celebrate National Ocean Month:
- Read books about the ocean
- Try a few marine biology activities
- Join NOAA all month long while they share information (these topics are great for high school)
Turkey Lovers Month – Weirdly enough, June is Turkey Lovers Month. I usually associate turkeys with Thanksgiving! This is a good opportunity to dust off your Thanksgiving turkey books and get another month of reading out of them.
1st – Dinosaur Day
Preschool and elementary-age kids all seem to go through a dinosaur phase. Take advantage of this natural interest and add in a few educational activities. Interest-led learning is a wonderful thing!
This dinosaur unit study looks really interesting. There are lesson plans and crafts to hold kids’ interest. I have a round-up of fun play-based dinosaur activities for preschoolers too.
Dinosaur Day is a great opportunity to discuss fossils. Many kids dream of discovering a dinosaur fossil, but they might be able to find a different type of fossil right in their own neighborhood! These fossil activities will help kids look beyond dinosaurs when looking for fossils.
2nd – National Rocky Road Day
Sure, we can celebrate National Rocky Road Day by simply eating an ice cream cone, but we can also enjoy an ice cream unit study. This cute free ice cream unit study offers a few great ideas:

- Easy hands-on activities
- Craft suggestions
- Videos
- Field trip ideas
5th – National Gingerbread Day
I have NO IDEA why National Gingerbread Day is in June. Gingerbread always screams Christmas or winter to me. Now that I think about it though, kids might get a kick out of doing something unexpected this month.
These Gingerbread Day activities were originally planned as part of our family Advent activities, but I think they could work any time of the year.
5th – National Doughnut Day
Years ago, I found a picture book about the history of doughnuts at the library. I love teaching history through things my kids are interested in, so I picked it up and planned a few activities to go with it. Check out The Hole Story of the Doughnut: Tasty History if your kids love doughnuts.
7th – National Chocolate Ice Cream Day
National Chocolate Ice Cream Day offers two learning opportunities. We can try the ice cream activities mentioned on Rocky Road Day, or we can lean into the chocolate flavor with a chocolate unit study.
9th – Donald Duck Day
I had no idea that Donald Duck Day was even a holiday until I researched educational holidays in June. On the surface, Donald Duck Day doesn’t sound educational. It was probably created to sell merchandise, but we can turn just about anything educational.
There are a variety of free Donald Duck worksheets available on Teachers Pay Teachers, an excellent free resource. Some of the options teach coordinate planes, propaganda (analyzing cartoons), number puzzles, and artist studies.
14th – Flag Day
A few years ago my son became really interested in flag design. He watched a few educational videos about flags. Flag Day is an excellent opportunity to watch a short flag video.

Many kids might be surprised to learn that there are more flags for their location than just the American flag. They also have a state, county, and perhaps city flag.
16th – Anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s Famous ‘House Divided’ Speech
Have you ever heard the quote “A house divided against itself cannot stand”?
Abraham Lincoln spoke those famous words at the Illinois Republican State Convention on June 16th, 1858. He had recently been nominated for the United States Senate and was speaking out against slavery. He wanted everyone to know that due to the Dred Scott decision, they needed to act fast if they had any hope of getting rid of slavery.
This is a great opportunity to read the speech and then take a virtual tour of the Lincoln family home.
19th – Juneteenth
Juneteenth is a day rich with history. It celebrates the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston Texas and informed enslaved people that they were free. Here are 23 educational Juneteenth activities for kids.
20th – World Refugee Day
The word ‘refugee’ seems to always be in the news. World Refugee Day is a great opportunity to learn more about refugees. These picture books about refugees for kids help kids gain a refugee perspective.
21st – Father’s Day
Father’s Day is June 21st this year. Celebrate your homeschool dad with these thoughtful homemade crafts.

21st – First Day of Summer
June 21st marks the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. This post by Science Sparks will teach kids all about the summer solstice. It even includes hands-on activities to extend the learning.
27th – National Bingo Day
Ever since my classroom kindergarten teacher days, I have loved occasionally including Bingo variations in my homeschool lesson plans. There are so many versions available, kids love them, and they require zero setup. A few educational varieties of Bingo include:
June Field Trip Ideas
June is a great time to plan field trips that might not have fit into your school year schedule.
Zoo or Aquarium – June is National Zoo and Aquarium month so planning a visit makes complete sense.
Botanical Gardens – If June is a month when everything is in bloom where you live, then this is a great time to visit a botanical garden.
Strawberry Patch – Depending on your location, strawberries can grow in June. This tends to happen in the Northern states. If you go pick strawberries be sure to try some of these educational strawberry activities after your trip!
Other Fun June Homeschool Activities
Try a new educational board game – Board games are a great way to pass time on a stormy summer afternoon.
Do a science experiment – Science experiments are great fun, but sometimes we run out of time to do as many as we would like during the school year. Now is the time to sprinkle in a few science experiments that are easy to do at home.
Plant a garden – We have planted a few things every year that we have lived in North Carolina. Every year we try something new. Sometimes it is a success and sometimes it is a bust, but it is always a learning experience. A few years ago we grew a pineapple. It was absolutely the most expensive pineapple we have ever eaten, but the kids still talk about it.
