The best homeschool science curriculum options teach students in a way that is interesting. Science should NOT be boring! I also believe that all of the best science curriculum options include hands-on activities such as experiments, projects, or a lab. There should be plenty of opportunities to practice the scientific method.

Like many homeschool parents, I have a few homeschool curriculum options that I recommend over and over. These are my favorite homeschool science curriculum options for elementary, middle school, and high school.

the best science curriculums for homeschoolers written in front of a child doing a science experiment

Kristin Moon Science Online Lab Videos

Grade level: high school

Secular – I have used both of these online lab video courses with my kids and never heard or read anything mentioning religion.

Topics:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry

When my oldest began her high school years, I realized how difficult it can be to do high school-level science labs at home. I didn’t want to do the same kitchen science experiments we had been doing for years, but I also didn’t have a full science lab at my disposal. This concerned me because I wanted my teens to have a solid science education.

Fortunately, I met Dr. Kristin Moon at a conference and learned about her online lab videos.

These online lab videos are amazing! My family has used the biology and chemistry lab courses, and I have been highly impressed by both.

Each lab course is designed to last one school year. The labs will work with any standard high school science textbook. I ordered old public school textbooks and study guide workbooks from Amazon, but there are free textbooks available online too.

I love these lab video courses for so many reasons:

  • They include video lessons taught by a professional scientist – Dr. Moon is an amazing teacher! She has a real talent for breaking down complex scientific concepts into easily understandable pieces.
  • They are REAL high school level science – not just kitchen science
  • The courses are well organized
  • The supply lists make it easy to have everything on hand before we need it
  • Each lab contains a lab report form with an answer key
  • Students can follow along with Dr. Moon while doing the activity (This is especially helpful if you are unable to purchase an item.)

Rabbit Trails Through Science

Grade level: elementary

Religious – This science curriculum has a Biblical worldview and religious references are mentioned frequently throughout this curriculum.

Topics:

  • Birds
  • Reptiles and Amphibians
  • Space
  • Biomes
  • Prehistoric Science
  • Weather
  • Homesteading
  • Bugs
  • Botany

Rabbit Trails Through Science reminds me of how I taught science when my kids were elementary students. It utilizes a teaching style that incorporates great books and interesting hands-on activities.

Each topic will take between 16 and 32 weeks to complete. The average school year is 32 – 36 weeks. This lets your family study 1 – 2 topics each year. The suggested schedule in the teacher’s guide is pretty flexible, so you can speed it up or slow it down to fit your needs.

Each week your family will read books related to the topic and do experiments, crafts, journal observations, and copy work. The related books are listed within the curriculum but are not included. Libraries and used bookstores are great resources to find the necessary books without spending a fortune.

I love this homeschool science curriculum because:

  • It can be used by multiple grade levels through elementary school, so it is easy to teach across grades
  • Lessons include plenty of living books
  • It includes hands-on activities about the natural world
  • Lessons are short and sweet
  • It makes learning science fun
  • Topics are specific subjects that kids generally find interesting

I wish Rabbit Trails Through Science had been available when my kids were young. It would have saved me a ton of planning time!

NOEO Science

Grade levels: elementary and middle school

Secular – This is a secular homeschool science curriculum, but the parent company is religious.

Topics:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics

When my oldest was beginning middle school grades, I decided to finally purchase a science curriculum. I chose NOEO because it felt like a more advanced level of what I was doing naturally – combining informational books with hands-on experiments and activities.

There is a lot to love about NOEO:

  • Everything you need for the year arrives in one large box – including science books and experiment kits
  • The instructor’s guide lesson plan tells you exactly what to do each day
  • Lessons are quick
  • Each collection is appropriate for a couple of grades, so it is easy to teach multiple kids who are close in age

I recently learned that NOEO offers mini collections. These boxes make great science unit studies!
