Must-have Homeschool Items

There are very few things I consider must-have homeschool items. Everyone has different strategies, needs, and wants. I personally don’t need a designated homeschool room or a fancy desk.
The things I DO need are actually pretty inexpensive and easy to find. I think these things will benefit all homeschool “classrooms” regardless of grade level.
We are now in our 6th year of homeschooling and I can honestly say that I would replace every single one of these homeschool materials immediately if anything happened to them.
Must-Have Homeschool Items
Pencil sharpener
Classroom Friendly pencil sharpeners are amazing! I have had this pencil sharpener for 4 years without a single problem. Before buying this pencil sharpener I was replacing our electric pencil sharpeners at least once a year. The Classroom Friendly pencil sharpener does not get clogged because you can easily take it apart to remove any particles
These pencil sharpeners come in a variety of fun colors to match any decor. If you can find a few friends to place a group order, you can save a little money.
Ticonderga pencils
Ticonderga pencils don’t seem to break as often as cheap pencils. It is worth it to spend a little bit more money and not deal with the inconvenience of a pencil breaking constantly. They are available on Amazon in large packs (sometimes on sale!) so you are sure to have a good pencil on hand when you need one.
Globe
Globes are vital for geography and history lessons. My kids seem to understand international travel a bit more when we can trace it on the globe. I found our globe at a thrift store, but if it was damaged or lost, I would replace it immediately.
Timer
Timers are great for motivating competitive students. There are no other third graders in our homeschool so Ben can compete against the timer.
I use the timer app on my phone all the time. The timer is also very helpful for breaking up subjects the kids don’t like. It makes the lesson feel finite and not like it is dragging on forever if I say we are only going to work on this for 20 minutes and then we will take a break.
Library card
A library card is my absolute favorite must-have homeschool item. What other card gives you free access to a huge variety of books, c.d.s, movies, computers, and educational programs? I actually got a new library card before a new drivers license when we moved. It is that important to me. Libraries are especially amazing if you can avoid fees.
White board and dry erase markers
I love having a magnetic whiteboard hanging in our dining room. It is helpful for demonstrating lessons or writing out directions. I usually store our All About Spelling tiles on the whiteboard so spelling is quick and easy and does not require extra setup prep.
Art supplies
I’m a firm believer that any home with children needs art supplies. They need the supplies to express themselves and be creative. Fine motor skills are developed at the art table. Art also adds a bit of fun and whimsy to homeschool lessons. I like to always have crayons, markers, paint, and play dough on hand at the very minimum.
Planner
A good planner is worth its weight in gold. Planners keep you on schedule and organized. The trick is to find the planner system that works best for you. Some people prefer a digital planner, but I need a written planner that I can customize.
