UPDATE: It seems that the Amazon STEM Club is no longer available. If you are looking for STEM kits to arrive in the mail check out:
I love Amazon. Amazon Prime, Subscribe and Save, Prime Pantry, Prime Videos…I love it all. We even have a Dash button! Amazon usually makes running my household a little easier because I can automate my common purchases. Due to my love of all things Amazon, I was excited when I read about the new Amazon STEM Clubs.
Amazon STEM Clubs are subscription clubs where Amazon will send you a STEM toy automatically each month. It is $19.99 each month and there are 3 age groups, 3-4, 5-7, and 8-13.
I signed up for the 8-13 age STEM Club the same day the new subscription service was announced because I was so excited!
I had visions of new and exciting educational toys arriving and entertaining/teaching my children each month with no work from me.
Maybe things like this molecular model kit would show up at my door. Or this Math Prime game I keep hearing so much about. Or maybe something so new and cool I haven’t even heard of it yet. The Amazon STEM toys page has so many great options and I was excited to check it all out.
It didn’t take long for the disappointment to set in.
My Amazon STEM Club Experience
The first Amazon STEM Club order was processed and mailed within a few days of the order. When I placed the order I had no idea what would arrive in the mail.
I was able to cheat a bit and find out what was headed our way as soon as the order was processed and preparing for shipment. The information was listed under my Amazon order history. I have mixed feelings about that. On one hand, it was nice being able to plan for the product (and this came in handy the second month!). On the other hand, it ruined the surprise.
It is my own fault, but I expected my order history to just say “STEM Club”, and not list the actual product.
Our first Amazon STEM Club product was a Science Behind Magic kit. This kit retails on Amazon for almost $28, so it was a good deal for the subscription price of $19.99. The kit contains 15 short experiments.
I really like this kit because it explains why an experiment works. That is the main purpose of science kits, but often that crucial detail is missing. This is a good science kit, especially if your kids are obsessed with magic (or Harry Potter, like my kids).
The problem is that we already have a ton of great science kits.
I tend to stockpile them because they are fantastic to pull out on long summer days. I really wanted STEM toys that my kids could do independently though, so this STEM Club shipment didn’t really meet my expectations.
Hannah and Ben did a few of the experiments before losing interest. I put it away to pull out some other time. We usually plow through science kits in the summer, when we aren’t as busy with school work.
I logged into my Amazon account a few days before my second Amazon STEM Club order was expected to ship and found they were sending….another science experiment kit.
I immediately canceled the order. We can always use another science experiment kit, but I don’t want to pay $19.99 when I don’t really want it.
The thing that really bothered me was that I had already purchased that exact science kit..from Amazon!
Ultimately, the Amazon STEM Club was not what I expected or wanted so I decided to cancel. Thankfully, Amazon made that process very easy.
The STEM Clubs might be a good fit for families that do not already own a plethora of science toys. It would make a nice recurring gift, especially for the 3-4 age group. That age group isn’t likely to own tons of STEM toys and they LOVE getting mail.
Have you tried any of the Amazon STEM Clubs? What was your experience?
