Ah, Pi Day. What started out as a geometry math term has become a holiday. At least it is a holiday among my homeschool friends! We even have a Pi Day party full of fun activities for Pi Day.
When is Pi Day?
March 14th can be written as 3.14, which is why it is known as Pi Day. This homeschool-friendly holiday comes around every year on March 14th.
Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. It will always equal 3.14159265359.
March 14, 2015 (3/14/15) was our first time celebrating this homeschool holiday. We celebrated at an actual party…with multiple homeschool families…and pie…lots of pie! It was so much fun that my family has celebrated Pi Day every year since then.
The celebration starts during the school day with special books and activities for Pi Day.

Activities for Pi Day and Crafts
Circle painting
This is a very simple project that is easy enough for the littlest learners. Even preschoolers can get in on the fun.
Materials:
- Circle lids (various sizes – I rescued a few lids from our recycling bin)
- Washable paint
- Paper plate
- Paper
All you need to do is put the paint colors of your choice on the paper plate and set out the circle-shaped lids. Kids of all ages can easily create circle art.
This is a project that can be done over and over again. To vary it, just change the paint colors and lids.
Pi Day Skyline
Materials:
- Graph paper
- Markers
Turn the graph paper horizontally so that the long side is on the bottom.
Color in one column for each place value of pi. The number of boxes shaded is the same as the digit in that place value.
So, color in 3 boxes in the first column, 1 in the next column, 4 in the next column, etc. The end result is that it resembles a city skyline.
Your child can add in sky details to complete the picture.
Pi Day Food
The celebration continues through meals. Activities for Pi Day can include preparing and eating fun snacks and meals. Every meal is a circle!
There are a ton of possibilities (and Pinterest will be your friend), but the circle-shaped meals can be as easy or intricate as you desire.
Here are a few of my favorite Pi Day meal.
Pi Day Breakfast
- Waffles (These are my absolute favorite gluten-free waffles)
- Pancakes
- English muffin
- Egg sandwich on English muffin
- Bowl of cereal (Cheerios would be perfect – then you are serving a circle-shaped food in a circle-shaped bowl!)
Pi Day Lunch
- Full circle quesadillas
- Pizza
- Bowl of soup
- Cut a sandwich into a circle with a cookie cutter
Pi Day Dinner
- Taco pie
- Hamburger pie – My kids love this recipe and it is easily converted to gluten-free.
- Shepherds pie
- Chicken pot pie
- Meatballs
Pi Day Dessert (Dessert is a must for any celebration – especially one with a name like PI DAY)
- Chocolate pie
- Apple pie
- Key lime pie
- Pumpkin pie
Have you ever celebrated Pi Day? It is a fun unexpected holiday. Inviting friends over makes this math holiday extra fun!
