7th Grade Homeschool Classes for My Son

In my early days of homeschooling, I always assumed that I would reuse curriculum from my oldest for my youngest. I thought that I would only need to choose 7th grade homeschool classes once.
For the most part, I was wrong.
My kids each have different learning styles with their own strengths, and weaknesses so it makes sense that their homeschool plans are different. One of my favorite benefits of homeschooling is being able to create truly custom educations for my kids.
These 7th grade homeschool classes include all of the typical core subjects (language arts, math, science, and social studies) as well as a few electives selected specifically for my son.
7th Grade Homeschool Classes for My Son
Language Arts
My son’s 7th grade homeschool classes for language arts include World Literature and Writing. He is a strong speller thanks to years of All About Spelling and his grammar skills are sharp because he diligently worked through a strong grammar curriculum last year.
I don’t feel the need to formally include spelling or grammar in this year’s lessons. Instead, I will just address any issues as they arise.
World Literature

My son’s 7th grade book list features novels set around the world. I’m hoping this will expose him to a variety of cultures, human experiences, and interesting stories.

We are taking this opportunity to also tie in a little geography. Each week we will watch travel videos, learn about the landscape, or try a regional recipe.
WriteShop 1
We have used WriteShop for years so it is no surprise that WriteShop 1 is one of the 7th grade homeschool classes I planned for my son.
The plan is for my son to complete WriteShop 1 in two years. I would rather he learns the skills well rather than rush through just to complete on an arbitrary timeline.

I feel like there is a bit of a difference in the presentation and lesson style between WriteShop Junior and WriteShop 1.
WriteShop Junior seems a little more childlike and whimsical. The lessons are shorter and include games.
WriteShop 1 is geared toward older students, making it a great addition to my son’s 7th grade homeschool classes. The lessons are more in-depth and require a bit more time. However, I think that using WriteShop Junior for the past few years has helped my son prepare for the longer and more in-depth lessons. He has a solid foundation so this increased difficulty feels like a natural progression.
Singapore Math 7
My son began using the Singapore Math curriculum last year and it was a good fit. He is naturally strong in math and does well with a challenging curriculum.
Singapore is a rigorous math curriculum, which is perfect for my son. The lessons can be long and require deep thinking. He usually doesn’t mind because he understands that if he wants to work in engineering or finance (his two current passions) strong math skills are required.
People frequently ask me why we chose Singapore Dimensions over Singapore Primary. The reason is really simple. Dimensions goes through middle school while Primary is just elementary school. My son didn’t start using Singapore Math until 6th grade, so the choice was pretty much made for us.
Biology
My son did not have strong feelings about which area of science to study this year, so I decided he would focus on Biology. My 10th grade daughter is learning about Biology this year, and honestly, it is a little easier for me if they are studying something similar.
Their individual lessons are different of course, but a common science theme will help with field trip planning (assuming things open up again sometime this year).
I prefer to use secular curricula and have yet to find one I love that is geared towards homeschoolers. Thankfully it is pretty easy to find used textbooks.

My son is using the Glencoe Biology: The Dynamics of Life, North Carolina Edition textbook. I picked this up at a used book sale last year for just a few dollars. I did not bother with the teacher guide because I feel pretty confident about my ability to remember middle school Biology. If I don’t remember things as well as I think I will then I can always read the textbook as a refresher.

Each week he reads a chapter and completes an activity. Sometimes the activity is a lab suggested in the book. Other times it is an activity or experiment I found online.
One advantage to finding the textbook so inexpensively is that it freed up money in the homeschool budget for a new microscope.
- 【Home 1000x Microscope】Lab compound monocular microscope come with WF10x & WF 25x eyepiece and 4x, 10x, 40xR DIN objectives assure superior optical…
- 【Focusing System】 Coaxial coarse and fine focus adjustment facilitates precise working, and the viewer does not constantly need to look up in order to…
- 【Excellent Contrast】Excellent contrast is typically achieved through staining the specimen so its colors would stand out when viewed in the microscope…

We have used a variety of microscopes in our years of homeschooling, but this is the first year we have had a really powerful microscope. The details we can see are amazing!
My son has spent entire days looking at things through the microscope lens. This new gadget certainly helped pique his interest in Biology!
Government
The 2020 school year feels like the perfect time to teach Government as one of my son’s 7th grade homeschool classes.
It is incredibly important to me that my kids really understand how our government is supposed to work. I want them to grow up to be engaged citizens.
I am using a few different resources to teach government this year:
- Used Book in Good Condition

We will work our way through the textbook, supplementing with games and videos, as we have lots of big discussions. I also plan to have my children watch the political debates with me. We have watched as a family since the 2016 election and my kids don’t seem to mind because they get to stay up late.
Spanish
We are continuing where we left off in our Spanish book last year, Easy Spanish Step by Step: Master High-Frequency Grammar for Spanish Proficiency – Fast!.
- Easy Spanish Step by Step proves that a solid grounding in grammar basics is the key to mastering a second language
- Grammatical rules and concepts are clearly explained in order of importance, and more than 300 verbs and key terms are introduced on the basis of frequency
- Numerous exercises and engaging readings help learners quickly build their Spanish speaking and comprehension prowess

I like the book we are using because it is a good mix of conjugating verbs, learning new vocabulary words, and practicing reading. Learning just through textbooks can be pretty dull though.
This is just one of his 7th grade homeschool classes, so I want it to be fun. Middle school does not have to be super serious all of the time!
A few activities I regularly include in the lesson plans are:
- Watch a show in Spanish with subtitles turned on
- Spanish Bingo
- Spanish poetry teatime

Computer
My husband is using his extra time at home to teach our son computer programming as one of his 7th grade homeschool classes.
My son has always loved taking a behind-the-scenes look at how computers work, so this class is right up his alley. He has a bit of basic programming experience using Code.org, so this year he is focusing on Python.
My husband has a computer science degree and has worked in the tech field for a very long time, so he is pretty comfortable teaching coding. Rather than reinvent the wheel he is helping our son work through a Udemy course: Learn Python Programming Masterclass.
Economics
My son has always been fascinated with money, so he loves learning about economics. My husband decided to teach this as part of our son’s 7th grade homeschool classes.
I can’t really describe this class because:
- My husband teaches it. I am 100% hands-off.
- My husband does not use a curriculum. They watch videos together, have long discussions, and are even investing.
One resource they are using is the Usborne Economics book. It does a good job of explaining somewhat abstract concepts in a way that a 12 year old can understand.
Painting with Bob Ross
This class is exactly what it sounds like. Each week my son will choose one Bob Ross episode on Amazon Prime. He will paint along with Bob Ross, pausing the video as often as needed to keep up.
We already pay for an Amazon Prime membership, so this is one of those7th grade homeschool classes that was really inexpensive. I just bought a few new art supplies:
My daughter is working through a how-to book all about painting and I suggested my son use the same book. He quickly reminded me that he likes to do things a little differently. It was actually his idea to let Bob Ross teach this class. This feels like a funny way to outsource a homeschool class, but that is okay. Whatever works!
