I am a big fan of tying books into whatever is happening in real life whenever possible. A good picture book can introduce complex ideas in a friendly and relatable way. These election books for kids do exactly that.
The election process can seem a bit complicated. There are so many big unfamiliar words (electoral college, caucus, candidates, etc.)! To help kids understand what is happening, we need to explain it at their level.
These election books for kids do a great job explaining why voting is important as well as the general process. There is even a little American History included.
I like to include a mix of nonfiction and fiction when I gather books on any topic. My daughter always preferred fiction because she was able to relate to the characters. Their struggles and successes made a big impact on her. My son preferred nonfiction books. He is very analytical and likes to stick to just the facts. He actually enjoyed reading more when I recognized this and gave him more nonfiction books to read.

Most ABC books are written for the preschool crowd, but this one is different. The words associated with each letter are a little advanced for preschoolers (although there is no harm in exposing little ones to big words). This book was written to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Not everyone has always had the right to vote in America. It is important to teach our children this history so that they can protect the right to vote for all future generations.
My kids are now past the picture book stage, but I think this is one of the most important election books for kids. I just reserved this book from my library so I can make sure they understand why they need to always protect the right to vote.
Older kids can enjoy picture books too.
