8 Fun Spring Homeschool Activities for Kids

Spring is a wonderful time of year. There are so many fun ways to learn while observing the change of seasons. Spring homeschooling can be fun. It is possible to have a fun time while learning.
These have always been some of my family’s favorite spring activities. Add these activity ideas to your spring lesson plans or simply keep them in mind for a day when you need a little spring fun.
Spring Homeschool Activities
Bird Unit Study
Spring is usually breeding season for birds. We love to fill up our bird feeder and see how many varieties of birds visit our backyard.
These bird activities are a perfect spring homeschool activity. You can even tie in a little geography by studying maps of migration patterns.
Strawberry Activities
Picking strawberries is one of our favorite family spring homeschool activities.
After picking pounds and pounds of berries we head home and dive into these educational strawberry activities. There are book recommendations and fun science activities.
Butterfly Activities
Have you noticed any butterflies in your neighborhood yet? As the weather warms up, butterflies start to migrate back through the northern hemisphere so spring is a great time to learn about these beautiful insects.

Backyard Nature Study
Nature studies do not need to be complicated. They can even be completed in your own yard! A nature study is a great way to intentionally observe the plants, animals, and weather in your location.
Spring is a transition season, so it is one of my favorite times to spend a little time noticing the budding flowers, growing grass, and birds visiting the bird feeder.
A backyard spring nature study is one of the easiest spring homeschool activities because all truly need is a little bit of time, although a nature journal is a nice addition.
If you want to take this to the next level, then go for a nature walk.
Spring Poetry Teatime
When my kids were in elementary and middle school grades we enjoyed a weekly poetry teatime. Sometimes they even had a theme.
A spring poetry teatime features spring snacks like seasonal fruit and spring poetry. This activity can be customized to whatever your family likes. Read as many or as few poems as your kids will sit still for.
Amazingly, even wiggly preschoolers will often sit quietly to sit for a poetry teatime if there are yummy snacks and silly poems.

Some homeschool families have huge gardens and they can allocate a small corner to their kids. That isn’t necessary though! I have a tiny yard and still manage to have space for my kids to help garden. Containers are a great option!
Kids will learn about how plants grow while also getting a little fresh air and sunshine.
Field Trips
Sometimes spring can be a difficult season to homeschool because everyone is getting burnt out. The school year is long and spring fever is real. Sometimes a break from the normal homeschool routine really helps! Field trips are a wonderful way to have an educational break.
Some great spring field trips include:
- Petting zoos
- Farms
- Zoos
- U-Pick farms
- Kid-friendly performances
Spring is also a popular time for school groups to go on field trips, so going in the afternoon whenever possible is helpful if you want to avoid a crowd. Most school groups leave around 1 so they have time to get back to school in time for dismissal.
