February is usually the month when the homeschool blahs hit my house. This time of year, everyone is tired of doing the same stuff day after day. The February funk is kicked up a notch this year, so I decided my family is going to celebrate every small holiday we can find with these February homeschool activities.
Celebrating special days and fun holidays is a great way to add a little fun to the month of February.
These ideas are fun additions to your February lesson plan, but they are also just fun ideas for families. You don’t have to homeschool to use these ideas. Fun learning opportunities can inspire a love of learning no matter the school format.
Having a few fun things to look forward to can make this shortest month of the year go by just a little faster.
February Homeschool Activities
Black History Month
February is Black History Month. I hope that everyone is making sure to include black history books in their homeschool all year long, but this is typically lacking in many history curriculums. This book list features biographies, African-American inventors and scientists, poetry, folktales, slavery, segregation, and Jim Crow books.
Look through the list and choose a few to read this month. Then make notes about which books might line up with your history and science curriculums.
Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson is another great book option. It tells the story, through poetry, of a girl growing up in the 1960s and 1970s.
Literary Adventures for Kids offers an online book club for Brown Girl Dreaming. The virtual book club is a bit more like a unit study than a traditional book club. It guides kids through the book while learning vocabulary words and following educational rabbit trails. The last activity is a ‘party’, so kids are definitely going to enjoy the book.
1 – National Dark Chocolate Day
Who doesn’t love a day dedicated to chocolate? This might be the tastiest of all the February homeschool activities! In addition to nibbling on a sweet treat try reading a few books all about chocolate.
If you have a family of chocolate lovers, then learning about chocolate with this free chocolate unit study is a great idea.
2 – Groundhog Day
February 2nd is Groundhog Day. This holiday is pretty silly, but kids love it. These Groundhog Day activities, books, and craft ideas are perfect for the day.
7 – National Periodic Table Day
National Periodic Table Day is a great opportunity to introduce kids to the periodic table. My family has this periodic table puzzle. I like it because it includes a photo of a way the element is actually used.

9 – National Pizza Day
February 9th is National Pizza Day. This is probably the silliest of all February holidays, but my family loves pizza, so I’m including it in the list of February homeschool activities. In addition to eating pizza add these pizza-themed books to your day.
11 – National Inventor’s Day
February 11th is National Inventors Day. Kids are natural inventors, so this is a great ‘holiday’ to celebrate. It is always a good day to dig through the recycling bin and invent new things. Here is a writing prompt about crazy inventions to add a writing element to the learning.
14 – Super Bowl Sunday
February 14th is Super Bowl Sunday this year. I’m not usually a football fan, but this year I’m ready to celebrate everything. This Super Bowl book list is a fun way to build excitement over this football ‘holiday’.
14 – Valentine’s Day
February 14th is Valentine’s day, but I like to stretch the fun for at least a week. There are SO many ways to make Valentine’s Day educational:

I have been using the Literary Adventures for Kids themed poetry teatimes this year and really enjoying them. It provides you with access to recommended poems, snacks, decor ideas, and writing activities. It makes planning a fun teatime so quick and easy. Poetry teatime can be a great time for kids of all ages.
Rabbit Trails Through Homeschool offers a Valentine’s Day unit study about the legend of Valentine’s Day.
15 – Susan B. Anthony Day
Susan B. Anthony Day is observed on Susan’s birthday. She is well known for her involvement in the women’s suffrage movement and was instrumental in helping women get the right to vote. This Time for Kids article is short and sweet for kids.
I would like to point out that Susan B. Anthony did not fight for the right to vote alone. Many minority women joined in the fight but have been left out of much of history. I recommend adding the book Finish the Fight: The Brave and Revolutionary Who Fought for the Right to Vote to have a more complete picture.

15 – President’s Day
February 15th (the 3rd Monday in February) is President’s Day. We celebrate President’s Day in February as a way to honor former presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln who were both born in February.
This year we will enjoy these President’s Day activities including virtual field trips of Presidential locations, crafts, and books.
26 – Tell a Fairy Tale Day
February 26th is Tell a Fairy Tale Day. Little ones love fairy tales. I suggest spending the day reading fairy tales, maybe dressing up as your favorite character, and learning how to write a fairy tale.
If you want to add a little cultural geography to the day, try reading fairy tales from multiple countries.
There are a few board games that are good any time of the year but are especially appropriate on Tell a Fairy Tale Day.
27 – International Polar Bear Day
February 27th is Polar Bear Day. My family will be taking a few minutes to watch polar bears on webcams around the country. My family loves going on virtual field trips, so I knew I had to include this idea in my list of February homeschool activities.

Polar bears are considered a vulnerable species so older students might like to research ways to protect them.
