Best {Not Too Scary} Halloween Books for Kids

I love seasonal books. When I was a kindergarten teacher, I spent way too much money at my local Barnes and Noble bookstore because I was a sucker for festively displayed books. It was worth it, though, because the kids loved the stories. I put together this list of Halloween books for kids to help parents and teachers choose some of the best titles possible.
What makes books the ‘best’ Halloween books for kids?

Did you grow up reading Berenstain Bear books? I did! An entire shelf of our bookshelf was dedicated to these wholesome books.
In this book, Brother and Sister Bear are preparing for Halloween. They are finally old enough to go trick-or-treating without a parent. They have made plans with their friends to go to as many houses as possible, with one exception. They all want to avoid Miz McGrizz’s home. Too-Tall has a few naughty tricks in mind for that house. Things don’t work out quite the way the young bears expect.
I always enjoyed reading these books to my kids when they were little because there is always a good life lesson. I can think of a few lessons that come from the Berenstain Bears Trick or Treat book:
- Don’t judge someone or something based on appearances
- Don’t always follow the crowd
Snowmen at Halloween by Caralyn Buehner

The Snowmen books by Caralyn Buehner are so cute. Snowmen at Halloween begins with children building a few snowmen and decorating them for Halloween. I’m not sure where this story takes place, but clearly not in North Carolina. Kids who live in warm climates will be amazed by the idea that some kids have snow in October.
After all of the people have gone to bed, the snowmen go gallivanting around town. They carve pumpkins in the village square, play carnival games, eat caramel apples, and trick-or-treat. They have to squeeze all of their fun in before the snow melts in the early morning hours.
One thing I like about this book is that there are hidden pictures on every page. After reading the story, kids can go back and look for a rabbit, a cat, and a T. rex in each illustration.
Making marshmallow play dough and creating marshmallow snowmen would be a great activity to pair with Snowmen at Halloween!

The silly typing ducks are at it again! Farmer Brown is afraid of Halloween. He doesn’t like the unfamiliar sounds and sights that accompany fall nights and flickering candles. The animals do not share his dislike of the holiday.
The farm animals are all preparing for a party in the barn. They hang up decorations and put on costumes.
The ducks do not want Farmer Brown to feel scared or alone, so they type up a party invitation and nail it to his door. It is always worth the effort to help people feel included.

I love books that focus on a state. I first found books like this when we moved to Washington. It was fun for the kids to notice places they had heard of before. These types of books make great gifts and souvenirs from traveling.
In Trick or Treat in North Carolina, and I suspect all of the books in this series, a cute little alien lands in North Carolina. He wants to check out some of the popular travel spots like the North Carolina Zoo, a few museums, and the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
He gets to meet a few North Carolinian children when he runs into a group of trick-or-treaters. It is a good thing he made friends because he needs their help to repair his spaceship so he can go home.
Don’t live in North Carolina? That is okay! There is a book for just about every state.
Pick a Pumpkin by Patricia Toht

This book follows a family as they select a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch, have a carving party, and get ready for trick-or-treating.
This is a great choice for young children because there is not much text on each page and there is rhyming text. The rhyming text makes it a great addition to a Halloween tea with poetry!
I really like the illustrations. The contrast of hazy blue grays with bright bold orange is beautiful and perfect for a Halloween book. There is also plenty of background detail in the pictures.
The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda D. Williams

This was one of my favorite Halloween books for kids in my kindergarten class. The kids always loved it.
The little old lady was normally very brave. In fact, she believed that she wasn’t afraid of anything. That changed one autumn night while she was walking alone through the woods.
While walking home, she heard a series of odd sounds and saw things moving by themselves. She had to admit to herself that maybe she was scared. She ended up safely back at her house, though.
So far, that is my list of the best Halloween books for kids. I will be sure to update the list as I come across new titles.
