Snowmen at Christmas by Caralyn Buehner is a cute seasonal spin on the popular book Snowmen at Night. The rhyming text and soft photos will draw children in.

A little boy builds a snowman on Christmas Eve and wonders how snowmen celebrate Christmas. He begins to imagine all sorts of possibilities. Maybe jolly snow families gather together to decorate the town square. Perhaps they play games or listen to music.

Read the book and then do these sweet Snowmen at Christmas activities.

Build Snowmen with Marshmallow Play Dough

My kids have always loved building snowmen. For most of their childhoods, we lived in places with at least a few snow days each winter. Now we live in North Carolina where snowy weather is rare. We need to get creative in order to build snowmen. 😉

Marshmallow play dough to the rescue! This playdough is fun to play with and is completely edible.

Marshmallow Playdough recipe

Marshmallow playdough ingredients (this makes enough for 2 kids):

  • 12 Marshmallows, regular size
  • 2 teaspoons coconut oil
  • 3 Tablespoons cornstarch

Directions:

  1. Place the marshmallows and coconut oil in a microwavable bowl and microwave for 30 seconds.
  2. Stir to combine.
  3. Fold in the cornstarch. Knead it in until the marshmallow playdough isn’t sticky.

Now that you have the marshmallow play dough prepared, it is time to build snowmen!

Let creativity be your guide when choosing items to decorate the snowmen. I set out items that I had in my pantry and in my candy jar.

I used:

  • Pretzel sticks
  • Chocolate chips
  • M&Ms
  • Gumdrops
  • Sweet Tarts
  • Twizzlers, sliced into thin strips

There really aren’t any directions necessary for this Snowmen at Christmas activity. Just put out an assortment of decorations and the marshmallow play dough and let your kids build to their heart’s content.

This is definitely an activity that I recommend washing hands before and after playing. I also suggest keeping each child’s playdough and supplies separate. The playdough stores well in any sort of sealed container. We used plastic bags.

Snowman Tea with Poetry

The rhyming text makes Snowmen at Christmas perfect for a snowman-themed poetry teatime.

My kids seem to learn through their stomachs and were happy to sit and listen to poetry from an early age as long as there were snacks available.

The important parts of a poetry teatime are:

  • Poetry
  • Treats
