I love all of the mouse books by Laura Numeroff, but If You Take a Mouse to the Movies is my favorite. In this beloved picture book, Mouse is up to all of the holiday antics. He has the holiday spirit and wants to do it all, leaving a mess in the wake. The famous little mouse series was definitely a family favorite when my kids were preschool age.
If your young learners love Mouse, definitely add this special Christmas edition to your holiday season reading list.
Children find Mouse’s antics hilarious and parents can sympathize with the little boy who tries to balance supporting Mouse’s wild dreams with keeping control of the situation. I think all parents have experience with being in that spot.

Delicious Activities for If You Take a Mouse to the Movies
String Popcorn
As soon as Mouse receives his bucket of movie theater popcorn he wants to string it all together. Stringing popcorn is a festive way to build fine motor skills.
String popcorn is very easy.
Ingredients:
- Popped popcorn, plain, preferably a day or so old
- Dental floss
- Thick needle
- Optional extras – Cheerios and fresh cranberries are popular
Directions
- Thread the needle with the dental floss. Tie a knot around the needle and another knot at the end of the length of the floss.
- Pass the needle through kernels of popcorn, one at a time.
- Once the piece of floss is full of popcorn remove the needle and tie a knot in the end.
A string of popcorn garland can go just about anywhere. The mouse in If You Take a Mouse to the Movies hangs it on a Christmas tree, but that is just one option.
Popcorn garland is also lovely as a garland draped from a fireplace mantel or in front of a window.
However, my favorite place to hang a real popcorn garland is outside. This creates a natural treat for birds and squirrels. Just drape the popcorn string around a tree and watch as the animals arrive for their Christmas snack.
Create a Personalized Christmas Popcorn
Even popcorn can have a Christmas flair. Some people like sweet treats and others like salty snacks. I love the combo of sweet and salty.
The recipe for Christmas popcorn can be personalized with whatever ingredients you like. The ingredients I used are:
- Popped popcorn
- Melted butter
- Fine sea salt
- Christmas sprinkles
- Red and green M&Ms
There really are not any directions for Christmas popcorn . . . just mix it all together!
I like to make Christmas popcorn the way the mouse decorates his tree at the end of If You Take a Mouse to the Movies – full, brightly colored, and crowded!
Build a Marshmallow Snowman
The mouse from If You Take a Mouse to the Movies notices a snowman in a neighbor’s yard on his way home from the tree lot. Going outside and making a snowman is always fun, but my family lives in the South. There is rarely enough snow to make a snowman in this part of North Carolina.
Instead, we can make a sticky and sweet marshmallow snowman. These are really fun and easy, so kids might want to make an entire snowman family.
Ingredients:
- Marshmallows, regular size
- Pretzel sticks
- Melted white chocolate
- Food coloring markers – be sure to explain the difference between regular markers and food-safe markers to the kiddos.
- Toothpicks
Directions
- Stack 3 marshmallows and put a small amount of melted white chocolate and a toothpick in between the marshmallows. This helps them stick together.
- Pretend the pretzel sticks are snowman arms and stick one in each side of the middle marshmallow.
- Use the food coloring markers to add details to the marshmallow snowman. Kids might want to draw on a carrot nose, rock eyes, a hat, and buttons. Creativity can be their guide.
