The Christmas season can be incredibly joyful and entertaining. It can also be an incredibly BUSY time of year. In addition to preparing for the holiday season, we still have a few weeks of homeschool lessons to create.
Some families manage holiday stress by taking a break between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Other families, like mine, try to incorporate Christmas fun into our regular life.
When my kids were younger, I tried to include at least one Christmas activity every single day in December until Christmas Day. It was so much fun! It is much easier to work with a child’s Christmas excitement than to try to fight against it.
Now my kids are teens and are busy with their own projects. They don’t want to do Christmas activities every single day, but they do enjoy a few favorites scattered throughout the entire month of December.

Some of the educational activities are perfect for Christmas lesson plans, and others are just family-friendly activities my family has enjoyed over the years.

Gingerbread Christmas Book and Activities – There are many books featuring gingerbread people, but Gingerbread Baby is one of my favorites. These fun activities will pair nicely with just about any gingerbread book.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas Activities – This Dr. Seuss classic Christmas story is a family favorite. Every year we watch one of the versions at least once. When my kids were younger, we would read the story and then do a few of these activities.

Rabbit Trails Through Christmas – Christmas Around the World – Kids can learn about the six holidays celebrated around the world with these great picture books. Over 1 – 2 weeks, they will do crafts, copy work, and do hands-on activities.
The Biggest Christmas Tree Ever – This picture book tells the story of two little mice who both want to have the biggest Christmas Tree ever. After reading the story, give these activities a try.
Turkey Claus Sweet Treats – I think Turkey Claus is a great book to read immediately after Thanksgiving. Everything is starting to transition to Christmas, but there are still turkey leftovers in your fridge. Read this book and then try some of the activities.
Best Historical Fiction Christmas Books for Kids – These books are a great addition to your Christmas lesson plans or your December book basket. Kids can learn about Christmas in different time periods through fictional characters.
Little Blue Truck’s Christmas Activities – Little Blue Truck is a favorite among the toddler and preschool crowd. They can do these simple activities after you read the story together.
How to Catch Santa Activities – These activities are a great way to extend the fun of reading How to Catch Santa. One of the ideas is to create a special cookie to tempt Santa Claus.
Delicious Activities for If You Take a Mouse to the Movies – Everyone loves this sweet mouse who is perpetually distracted. I’m sure many of us can relate! Read the book and then try an activity or two. The Christmas popcorn is my favorite!
The Christmas Pack – All About Learning – This free printable pack from All About Learning offers kids festive reading and spelling practice opportunities. When my kids were elementary age, I liked to keep items like this on hand at all times. Then I could just pull them out when I needed them to work independently for a little bit.
Pick a Pine Tree Book and Activities – Beautiful rhyming text tells the story of how an ordinary pine tree becomes a lovely Christmas tree. Of course, I paired a few activities and snacks with this book.
Sweet Polar Express Activities – The Polar Express is a classic book and a classic movie. These snack ideas are a fun addition to storytime or movie time.
Best Family-Friendly Christmas Movies – These Christmas movies are fun for the whole family. We like to watch them back to back during our all-night Christmas movie marathon.

ABCs of Christmas – When I was a classroom kindergarten teacher, I came up with a different Christmas craft or activity for every letter of the alphabet. These activities are great to stretch out all month long.
Christmas Doughnut Bar – My family loves doughnuts, so one December we decided to make a doughnut bar. We make doughnuts (you can buy them too) and set out tons of different toppings. It is fun to see what everyone creates! This is also a fun dessert option if you have families over.
Christmas Lights Scavenger Hunt – This free printable offers a quick Advent activity. All you need to do is drive (or walk) around your neighborhood and find as many of these decorations as possible.
