We have reached the time of year when my kids are extremely distracted.  They are so hyped up with the excitement of Christmas that they don’t want to sit still for our standard lessons.  I don’t blame them.  I don’t want to stick with the same old same old either.  Instead, I weave Christmas lesson plans into our regular homeschool curriculum.

This plan helps keep us moving toward our educational goals while also acknowledging the excitement in the air. We have the flexibility to tailor our children’s education to their interests and we might as well take advantage.

Right now, my kids’ main interest is Christmas.

I discovered a long time ago, back in my classroom teacher days, that it is a whole lot easier to work with a child’s excitement than fight against it.

Besides, it always makes me feel like a Grinch to squash their Christmas excitement.  I don’t want to stop teaching for the entire month of December and adding a few Christmas-themed educational activities is a fun way to continue practicing important skills.

I sprinkle in Christmas lesson plans in addition to all of our family fun Advent activities.

Christmas Writing Prompts – These free Christmas writing prompts are a great way to add in a little writing practice to your Christmas homeschool lessons.

Christmas Simile and Metaphor Cards – Print out these 32 cards for extra simile and metaphor practice.  I plan to laminate the cards and make them an independent activity to complete while I’m working with a sibling.

The Christmas Mystery ~ Prepositional Phrases  – Students will identify prepositional phrases in Christmas-themed sentences.  I know my kids can always use extra grammar practice!

Christmas Letter Find – I love that these letter find pages have a cursive option!

Read A Christmas Carol – A Christmas Carol is a classic holiday story. It is pretty short, which makes it a great choice to read in the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Take the learning to the next level with the A Christmas Carol online book club. These book clubs work like a unit study. There are options for middle school and high school students.

Math Christmas Lesson Plans

Christmas Addition Puzzles – These printable addition puzzles are a great addition to an elementary math center or boredom-busting basket.

Fun Christmas Fraction Art Activity – Follow the directions on the task cards to use fractions to create a snowman picture.  There are options for reducing and not reducing fractions.

Solving Quadratic Equations ~ Christmas in Hawaii – Older students can practice solving quadratic equations while racing around this printable game board.  The first one to reach the beach hut wins!

Christmas Budgeting – Put each child in charge of planning a fictional Christmas meal.  Give them a set budget and challenge them to plan a special meal for everyone using grocery store sales fliers.  Don’t have a newspaper or sales flier?  No problem!  Most grocery stores have them available online (this is a great way to show kids the benefits of comparison shopping).

These homeschool Christmas lesson plans are a great way to sprinkle a little education in among all the holiday festivities.

Science Christmas Lesson Plans

Compound Chemistry Christmas – Students will use this worksheet to complete an online scavenger hunt that manages to combine compound chemistry, Christmas, and fun.

Fizzing Candy Canes – This Christmas science experiment uses supplies that you probably already have around the house – candy canes, vinegar, and baking soda.

Poinsettia PH Science Experiment – Poinsettias are popping up everywhere. I have seen them in multiple stores this week. Grab a plant to add to your decor, but save a few poinsettia leaves (the red) to make pH paper.

History/Geography Christmas Lesson Plans

Historical Fiction Christmas Books – Add these books to your Christmas lesson plans. They cover a variety of historical time periods.

Read about Christmas Around the World – Learn about Christmas traditions around the world by reading these books.
