String Popcorn
Bear and his friends string popcorn to decorate the Christmas tree while they attempt to stay awake. We can string popcorn too!
Stringing popcorn is very easy. My kids like to make popcorn garlands while watching a holiday movie or listening to a Christmas chapter book. It gives them something to do with their hands, which helps them concentrate on the story.
All you need is a thick needle (plastic for little ones), cooked popcorn, and dental floss.

Make a Quilt
Badger gives Bear a homemade quilt on Christmas morning. Bear immediately snuggles up with the soft blanket and falls asleep.
Making a true quilt is a little advanced, but we can help our kids make a kid-friendly quilt as one of the Bear Stays Up for Christmas activities.
There are two ways for kids to make a ‘quilt’:
- Make a tie blanket with fleece
- Weave a paper ‘quilt’ for toys
The tie blanket activity produces an actual blanket, yet is easy enough for a child to make. If a child can tie knots, they can make this blanket. Get the complete instructions online. All that is needed is:
- 2 coordinating pieces of fleece
- Fabric scissors
- Ruler
The woven paper ‘quilt’ is just the right size for toys. It looks like a quilt, although it doesn’t function like one. The benefit is that it uses materials you probably already have in your home:
- 2 pieces of construction paper
- Scissors
