The Biggest Christmas Tree Ever by Steven Kroll tells the story of two little mice who both want to find and decorate the biggest Christmas tree. They are so excited by the possibility of having the biggest and best Christmas tree that they begin looking for the perfect tree right after Thanksgiving.

Clayton, a house mouse, and Desmond, a field mouse, wind up searching high and low in the same Christmas tree farm. They both want the same tree, so they decide to work together. They use teamwork to create a beautiful Christmas tree for their friends and family in Mouseville to enjoy.

I always loved reading this story to my kindergarten class because it modeled teamwork. When we work together we can achieve great things.

Sugar Cone Christmas Tree

Sugar cones are not just for ice cream. With a little imagination, they are the perfect shape to be Christmas trees!

Ingredients:

  • Sugar cones (the ones with pointy ends are best)
  • Frosting (I used frosting from a tub)
  • Green food coloring
  • Candy decorations – Christmas M&Ms and sprinkles work well

Directions:

  1. Use the food coloring to dye the frosting green.
  2. Cover the outside of the sugar cone with frosting. We used a butter knife to spread the frosting. It gets a little messy, but hands are easily washed.
  3. Pretend the candy decorations are Christmas ornaments and add them to your tree. Every tree will be decorated a little differently.
  4. Eat! Canned frosting doesn’t harden well, so these sugar cone Christmas trees are better as a dessert than a decoration.

Build The Biggest Christmas Tree Ever

Challenge your kids to work together, just like Clayton and Desmond, to build the biggest Christmas tree ever. Sharing their ideas and agreeing on a plan are important skills that are learned by working cooperatively.

There are many ways to build a Christmas tree. Let your kids follow their creativity. Possible options include:

  • Legos
  • Wooden blocks
  • Construction paper
  • Roll of butcher paper and craft supplies
  • Decorate boxes (I can’t be the only one with a huge collection of Amazon and Target boxes)

Measure Christmas Trees

If your house is anything like mine, you have many Christmas tree decorations around the house – full-size Christmas trees, bottle brush trees, wooden decorations, tree-shaped ornaments, tree cookie cutters, etc.

Help your kids find the biggest Christmas tree in your home by giving them a measuring tape and a ruler. This is great practice for measuring. Ask them to keep track of each tree’s size and then rank them in size order for a little extra practice ordering.
