Complete 11th Grade Homeschool Curriculum

I can hardly believe that I am already planning my daughter’s 11th grade homeschool curriculum. How has time passed this quickly?! I can already feel our homeschool days drawing to a close and I’m not sure I like it. Change isn’t easy.
My goals with this 11th grade homeschool curriculum are:
- Strengthen existing skills
- Check college admission requirements off her high school plan
- Explore new interests
- Give a little more independence
My daughter and I created her 11th grade homeschool curriculum plan together. At this point she needs to be an active participant in her education because in a few years she will get to make all of the decisions at college.
These courses all make up a complete well rounded 11th grade homeschool curriculum.

Language Arts Curriculum
Grammar
I want my daughter to brush up on grammar rules before taking the SATs this year. I selected the Easy Grammar 180 Day Teaching Lessons as the grammar portion of my daughter’s 11th grade homeschool curriculum.

Every day there is one worksheet page to complete. The worksheet acts as a review for a variety of grammar topics:
- Capitalization
- Parts of speech
- Punctuation
- Phrases and clauses
- Sentence Combining
- Prefixes, roots, and suffixes
- Conjunctions
- Analogies
The daily assignments will likely take no more than 10 minutes but will alert me to any learning gaps. This approach will let me spend time teaching any material she has forgotten, but we won’t waste time teaching material she has already mastered.
Vocabulary
Vocabulary is another topic I want my daughter to brush up on before the SATS. She is an avid reader and learns most new words that way, but I wanted to make sure she had a solid grasp before beginning all of the college admission testings.
I chose the Vocabulary Virtuosos PSAT-SAT Book 2 from The Critical Thinking Co. This book is divided into 20 vocabulary lists with 5 review activities. This will let my daughter work through a list most weeks but will give her the flexibility to drop this subject on weeks that she has an important test or project that keeps her busy.

Each vocabulary list includes:
- Page with words and definitions
- Choose the best word for the sentence from 3 choices
- Choose the best word from the entire list
- Fill in the blank in a story
- Choose the best synonym for a list word
- Match the vocabulary word with its definition
- Complete the sentence
Reading
Every year I create a personalized reading list for my daughter and this year is no exception. I’m choosing books centered around American History to support her history class. Thankfully she loves history, so she is excited about this plan.
Choosing factual, yet interesting, American History books has been harder than I expected. I want to make sure that a variety of perspectives are included. I am actively seeking out viewpoints of women, Native Americans, and enslaved people. I will update this once I have a solid list of books ready.
Writing
My daughter finished the last level of WriteShop last year, but that doesn’t mean she will stop writing.
This year I will assign papers of varying lengths on topics related to her 11th grade homeschool curriculum. She will also start writing a few college essays from this list of college essay topics. She has another year until she will actually apply to colleges, but there is no harm in getting a jump start on writing a few essays.
Math Curriculum
The past two years my daughter has used Math U See for the math portion of her 11th grade homeschool curriculum. The format works well for her, so she will be using the Algebra 2 level of Math U See this year.
Generally, we watch the weekly video lesson together on Mondays. I watch too so that I can help whenever needed. It has been a long time since my own high school math days , so the refresher is definitely appreciated. The rest of the week she works the problems on each lesson while I sit nearby so I can help if needed.
I like to check problems as we go, one or two at a time, so that I can head off any mistakes before they become a pattern.
Science Curriculum
My daughter is learning about chemistry this year to fulfill the science requirement of her 11th grade homeschool curriculum. Her chemistry credit is broken down into two pieces: textbook and lab.
Textbook
I prefer to use secular curricula, but that can be hard to find at the high school level for science. The past two years we used public school textbooks and it has worked well.
Used public school textbooks are pretty easy to find on Amazon and Thriftbooks.com and the price is usually pretty good. I don’t mind using editions that are a few years old because high school level chemistry doesn’t change that quickly. I can always supplement with new articles and documentaries.
This year my daughter will use the Prentice Hall Chemistry book and study workbook. I am still working out the pacing, but there are 25 chapters, so she will likely work through 3/4 of a chapter each week.

I always buy the science study workbooks whenever available because they help her cement her understanding of what she read. They are also useful for seeing what she needs help with.
Chemistry Video Labs
I love including hands-on activities in our homeschool lesson plans, so science labs are a natural addition. My family’s schedule is up in the air at the moment, so I wanted the labs to be something we can do at home.
I was chatting with my friend Kristin from KristinMoonScience and she mentioned that she was putting together a lab that could supplement any high school chemistry course. I knew instantly that this was going to be a great fit!
Kristin’s chemistry lab is going to be awesome because:
- It video based online
- She includes the directions and lab supply lists so students can follow along at home
- Kristin has a science background – she was a microbiologist in a real lab before homeschooling her kids
- It is self-paced
- It aligns with the typical high school chemistry standards, making it a fit for any curriculum
My daughter is all signed up and I am already so impressed! I have really struggled in the past with finding high school-level labs that could be done at home. Most of what is available online seems to be simple kitchen chemistry, which has its place but generally isn’t high school level. History
History will likely be the easiest course in my daughter’s 11th grade homeschool curriculum . . . because I don’t have to teach it. Dual enrollment can be a beautiful thing.
She is enrolled at our local community college in an American History course. This will give her high school credit and college credit for the same class. This is her first college course, so she decided to start with something that she really enjoys – history.
I expect the course will move quickly. The syllabus says that they will cover migration to the Americas through the Civil War in the first semester. That is a lot of material to learn in just a few months!
Thankfully, I can tailor her 11th grade homeschool curriculum reading list to support her college history work.
Psychology
My daughter chose psychology as the main elective in her 11th grade homeschool curriculum. She studied child development last year and found it really interesting, so I think she will enjoy learning about psychology too.
I have a bachelor’s degree in psychology, so I feel pretty confident teaching this subject, but I am also picky about curriculum.
Literary Adventures is offering a 0.5-credit high school psychology course. My plan is to add extra reading assignments, documentaries, and writing assignments to stretch the course to a full-year, one-credit course.

Foreign Language
We are continuing to learn Spanish as part of my daughter’s 11th grade homeschool curriculum. Once again, my husband and I are doing most of the teaching. I took Spanish all through high school and a few years of college. My husband did all of that and lived in Spain for a summer, so we feel decently qualified to teach high school Spanish.
My kids made an off-the-cuff remark last year that they felt like they got the most out of their Spanish lessons when they involved games and worksheets.
I can work with that.
This year we are starting with two workbooks and a card game.
The workbooks are Spanish Middle/High School Skills for Success and Spanish Middle/High School the 100+ Series. I plan to use them together, alternating workbooks for skills. For example, they will do pages about prepositions from both books before moving on to the next topic.
At least once a week, we will play Kloo Spanish. The idea of the game is that you use cards to create sentences. I am hoping this will help cement grammar and sentence structure skills.
P.E.
P.E. is a class that we are only including in our 11th grade homeschool curriculum because it is expected on high school transcripts. I doubt colleges would care if it was missing, but I don’t have a good reason to exclude it.
My kids have never really been into sports. They each tried soccer for a year, so they know the general rules, but it wasn’t something they enjoyed. They get that from me because I am not particularly sporty. I work out most days, but just follow online workout programs.
My original plan for P.E. was going to be exercise videos, but my husband volunteered to teach this class. He plans to teach the kids how to play tennis one semester and basketball another.
