When I was a kindergarten teacher, I loved putting a seasonal twist on educational activities. It made frequent activities feel fun and new. Activities like these Halloween rhyming words activities kept kids engaged and learning.

Rhyming can feel like a really basic skill that doesn’t need explicit instruction or practice, but it is actually an important step in phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, recognize, and manipulate different parts of words. Learning to read requires phonemic awareness.

Thankfully, there are lots of fun ways for kids to practice rhyming. These activities are perfect to use with Halloween rhyming words.

Literacy Centers

Build rhyming words with magnetic letters

When I was a kindergarten teacher, one of the weekly literacy centers included building rhyming words with magnetic letters. The words changed each week, but I also tried to give the activity a seasonal feel by writing the words on a cute notepad.

Every word had its own piece of paper. I taped the papers on a standing magnetic whiteboard, but you can use the fridge, dishwasher, baking tray, or any magnetic surface. Just make sure to leave enough room for the child to build the word.

Build rhyming words in a sensory bin

Another literacy center on weekly rotation in my classroom involved the sensory bin. My sensory table was filled with rice, but you could also use dry noodles, pom poms, corn kernels, or beans. There are a ton of possibilities!

Write each letter of the alphabet on a piece of pumpkin-shaped paper. You could also use black cat cutouts. A white Sharpie will show up against the black paper. Make sure that you have multiples of common letters so that kids can build the words.

Kids just dig through the bin, find letters, and build their words.

CVC rhyming Boom Cards

Boom Cards are a fun way to include technology in your literacy centers rotation. Parents sign up for a teacher account, and kids get a student account. Then parents can assign Boom Cards and see progress.

There are quite a few CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) rhyming word Boom packages available for a few dollars.

Halloween rhyming memory

This Halloween rhyming words activity can be used as a matching game or as a memory game.

First, I would let kids match the caps when they can see all of the pictures.

After they are confidently able to make the matches, then I would try organizing it as a memory-matching game.

Rhyming pumpkin puzzles

This free printable activity is so cute! Just print out the pumpkins, cut them out, laminate them if you want, and you have a seasonal literacy game ready to go! Kids then match up the rhyming pumpkin halves.

I loved using activities like this with my kids when they were younger. They were a great activity to add to our boredom busting baskets.

Sing and do finger plays – This is a great activity for circle time! A finger play is a short nursery rhyme or song with motions for little fingers.

These fingerplays can help get out a few wiggles before it is time to sit for a few minutes.

Books

Books are a great way to introduce and reinforce Halloween rhyming words. Kids enjoy the cute seasonal stories while hearing a plethora of rhyming words.

These Halloween books are perfect for little ones because they are short enough to hold little attention spans and they feature rhyming text.

Halloween Poetry Teatime

A Halloween poetry teatime is a fun way to keep kids at the table listening to poetry. I began having weekly poetry teatimes when my kids were 4 and 7. Amazingly, my son (4) was happy to sit and listen to poetry as long as there were delicious treats to munch on.

All you really need for a Halloween poetry teatime is Halloween poetry (rhyming books count!) and snacks.

Halloween is the perfect time to incorporate a few fun rhyming activities into your lesson plans or homeschool day.
