Halloween writing prompts for kindergarten are a fun way to make writing practice more interesting for young learners. Young children enjoy celebrating. In my years as a classroom kindergarten teacher and homeschool mom, I have learned that it is easier to work with their holiday excitement than try to work against it. Familiar holiday themes like pumpkins, costumes, candy, ghosts, and trick-or-treating can give kindergarteners ideas to write about while they practice early writing skills. The expectations for kindergarten writing can vary widely from child to child. Some kindergarteners are writing full sentences by Halloween, and others are struggling to hold a pencil correctly. Either scenario is okay! October is still very early in the homeschool year. One of the goals of kindergarten writing is for children to see themselves as a writer. Meet your child where they are. It is okay if you, as the parent, write a sentence that they dictate. There is a benefit to putting pencil to paper, though, and even young children can draw a picture.

Depending on your specific child, they might be able to:

Ways to Use Halloween Writing Prompts for Kindergarten

Writing Center

A writing center was always part of my kindergarten classroom. Years ago, when kindergarten included more play time, I kept a stocked writing center out at all times. More recently, I included a writing center as part of our indoor recess options. Somehow, creating a cute writing center seems to make this educational activity a little more fun. Even reluctant writers want to participate in a Halloween writing activity.

For a homeschool kindergarten writing center with a Halloween theme, consider setting up a little area with:

• Kindergarten writing paper
• Fun writing utensils, such as Halloween pencils, colored pencils, markers, or even pens
• Picture dictionary or Halloween vocabulary cards
• Halloween writing prompts for kindergarten
• Pumpkin sticky note pads

If you don’t have the space to leave the writing center out on a table or desk all of the time, consider storing everything in an accessible basket. Then kids can pick up the basket and create their own writing center anytime they want to write.

Writing Journal Entry

Creative writing prompts are a great way to use a writing journal. The writing journal can be used in multiple ways:

• Morning work activity to wake up the brain and get ready for the school day
• Warm-up activity before a writing lesson
• Closing activity after a writing lesson (They do what you tell them to during the lesson and then get to have some free writing time.)
• Writing activity for the day

Composition notebooks tend to be the popular choice for writing journals, but I prefer using a spiral-bound journal for kids. Composition notebooks can be hard to lay flat, which can frustrate little kids. I like to remove that source of frustration whenever possible. I chose the Lakeshore Draw and Write Journal when my kids were younger. I recommend using a sticky note to help them find the next blank page; otherwise, kindergarteners tend to just flip until they see a blank page, regardless of whether that is the next page or 30 pages forward.

Halloween Lesson Plan Activity

I like to capitalize on children’s excitement whenever possible. Let’s use their excitement about Halloween to our advantage and incorporate Halloween into our homeschool lesson plans. The week leading up to Halloween is the perfect time to add in a little Halloween fun to your schoolwork. Book-Inspired Writing

Kindergarten students frequently feel inspired to write after reading a good book. First, read a fun Halloween story and then:
