Kindergarten Calendar Wall: Great Options for Home

Calendar time is standard in most preschool and early elementary classrooms because it is a great way to review multiple skills and educational standards while also getting ready for the day. A kindergarten calendar wall can be a great addition to a kindergarten homeschool too.
I recently set up a kindergarten calendar wall for my kindergarten homeschool program. When I was choosing what to include, I took a look at the educational standards for kindergarten in North Carolina and Virginia. I live in North Carolina, but I find their standards to be a bit lacking. The Virginia standards are more thorough and better represent what I want my students to accomplish in a school year. While I do not have to follow the standards, I like to use them as a reference. I want my students to learn at least as much as they would in a traditional classroom; ideally more!
The kindergarten math, science, and language arts standards that are traditionally taught during calendar time are:
- Count to 100 by 1s
- Count to 100 by 10s
- Count forward from a number other than 1
- Use one-to-one correspondence to count objects
- Count backward from 20 to 0
- State the number before a number
- State the number after a number
- Compose and decompose numbers
- Identify a calendar as a tool used to measure time
- Name the days of the week
- Name the day before and the day after a given day
- Name the months of the year
- Distinguish between days of the week and months of the year
- Create object graphs and picture graphs
- Describe patterns
- Understand change and observable patterns of weather that occur from day to day across the year
- Take turns speaking
- Identify lowercase and uppercase letters

I chose this monthly calendar pocket chart for a couple of reasons:
- The days of the week cards show the full word and the abbreviation
- The number cards are generic and not specific to a theme
- It includes multiple year cards
- Pocket charts are durable
I want to use the daily calendar cards to review patterning. At the beginning of the kindergarten year, we will start with solid cards. By the second month, I will alternate types of cards to create an AB pattern. An AB pattern can be created by using two different pictures on the number cards or two different colors. Rather than buy new cards each month, I just create them on Canva. I store them in baggies.

I have a spot in my kindergarten classroom with the months of the year listed in order. I used the monthly headliners that are originally intended to go at the top of a kindergarten calendar wall. Every day we say the months of the year in order. We also identify our current month. Then we say, spell, and say the month. For example, for June we would say “June, capital J, u, n, e, June”. This not only helps with spelling, but reinforces that months of the year start with a capital letter.

Hundreds pocket charts are fantastic for reviewing math during calendar time. I specifically chose this hundreds pocket chart because every number card is reversible. At the beginning of the year, I show the white background side of every number except the multiples of 10; those show the red background. This makes it a little easier to count by 10s. Later in the year, the multiples of 5 will show the red background so we can count by 5s. By the end of the year, the even number cards will show the red background so we can count by 2s.
Ideas to use the hundreds pocket chart include:
- Count to 100 by 1s
- Count to 100 by 10s
- Count by 5s
- Count by 2s
- Identify even and odd numbers
- Identify one more
- Identify one less
- Begin counting at a number other than 1
- Count backwards (We count down from 10; when we get to zero, we do ‘silent sparkle firewords hands’ – that is just a quiet wiggling of fingers in the air, but 5-year-olds love it.)
- Find the missing number – I remove a number card, and they need to figure out which number is missing.
- Put the number in the right order – I remove multiple number cards, and they need to figure out where to put each card.

Every day we identify the season and the weather. I like that this set of season and weather cards has space for two types of weather. Some days it is hot and windy or cold and rainy. I store all of the weather cards in a plastic crayon box.
This is a fantastic time to work graphing into your kindergarten calendar time. Each day, either add the appropriate weather card to your graph pocket chart or color in a bar of a bar graph.

A place value pocket chart is a great way to count the number of days you have had school. Every day, add one straw to the ones column. Every 10 days, bundle the 10 straws with a rubber band and move the group to the tens column. On day 100, rubber band the 10 bundles and move the group to the hundreds column. It is a way for children to repeatedly see regrouping. This set includes a mix of color straws, but my preference is to use all one color. I used coffee stirring sticks in my kindergarten classroom.
This is everything that I have on my kindergarten calendar wall, but there are other activities I like to include during calendar time:
- Roll a large die, and then everyone does that many jumping jacks, squats, lunges, etc.
- Hand a child a pointer and ask them to find something around the room that is a certain shape, a specific color, or begins with a letter.
- Write letters on a beach ball. Toss the ball to each other and then say the letter that is closest to the left thumb. You can mix up lowercase and uppercase or have two separate beach balls.
I hope these ideas help you use a kindergarten calendar wall at home with your own child.
