The month of July is the perfect time for some educational summer fun. Many homeschool families are taking a summer break, but we don’t always want to stop learning. These July homeschool ideas can be a fun way to get kids interested in learning during this time of the year.
I suggest doing the activities that appeal to your family this month, but also saving some of the great resources for lessons during the school year.
I hope these great ideas help you enjoy fun holidays all month long.
July Homeschool Ideas
National Blueberry Month
July is National Blueberry Month. There is so much we can do to have fun during National Blueberry Month! A few ideas are:
- Read Blueberries for Sal and then try a few of the suggested activities
- Go blueberry picking
- Try a new blueberry treat
- Use blueberries as an edible math manipulative

National Ice Cream Month
Who can resist celebrating National Ice Cream Month? I’m sure kids of all ages will get excited about his special month!
This ice cream mini-unit study is perfect for July. You certainly do not need to do all of the activities or read all of the books. Just do whatever sounds fun for your family.
There is a cute Curious George ice cream book that is perfect for National Ice Cream Month. This is a great time to read the book and then go to an ice cream parlor. If it is arranged in advance, the owner might be willing to host a field trip.

National Culinary Arts Month
Everyone eats so everyone can celebrate National Culinary Arts Month! A few ideas include:
- Teaching your kids to cook with this personalized cooking curriculum
- Watching food competition shows
- Read books about cooking and baking
We can even combine all three of the special month topics and make homemade blueberry ice cream with our kids. 😉
1st – American Zoo Day
American Zoo Day is a perfect excuse to visit a zoo. I don’t know about the weather where you live, but here in North Carolina, July 1st is usually pretty hot. Thankfully we don’t need to physically go to the zoo.
We can take a zoo field trip online! Visiting online zoo exhibits is a great way to check out a ton of animals from the comfort of our air-conditioned houses. There is no traffic, no lines, and no admission fee.

4th – Independence Day
In the United States of America, July 4th is Independence Day, the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Many families watch fireworks that evening, but we can keep kids occupied during the day with these simple Fourth of July crafts.
This American flag printable craft is easy enough for toddlers and can be part of your holiday decor.
If you want to add in a little American history education, check out this free Francis Scott Key lesson plan. This is a fun 4th of July activity, but it can also be added to any American Revolution lesson.
4th – Alice in Wonderland Day
July 4th is also Alice in Wonderland Day. This is a great chance to watch the movie, but older kids might enjoy reading the novel. This book tends to end up on high school summer reading lists.
If your teen wants to read this book (or YOU want them to read this book) consider signing them up for the Alice in Wonderland book study by Literary Adventures for Kids. Over the course of a month, teens will read the story, learn vocabulary, and practice grammar, while still having time for fun little educational rabbit trails.
7th – World Chocolate Day
World Chocolate Day is a fun way to get kids to learn all about chocolate. This free mini-unit study teaches kids a bit about the history of chocolate, but it also includes fun activities. My kids really enjoyed the activity where they designed their own chocolate bars, although the chocolate taste test was a close second.

8th – International Video Game Day
One year in middle school, my son requested to learn about the history of video games for an entire semester. I put together a plan and we both learned quite a bit!
These books are an educational way to learn about video games, but this isn’t the only way to celebrate. Of course, I’m sure kids would also be happy with a little extra screen time for the ‘holiday’.
8th – Math 2.0 Day
Math 2.0 Day is all about celebrating math. Some people don’t enjoy math, but I think we can all agree that math is pretty useful.
This is a great opportunity to practice math skills through hands-on fun with educational board games. Keeping the practice fun will help build a positive attitude about math.
July STEM activities do not need to be complicated. Celebrating a few of these silly holidays is a great way to keep kids learning.
12th – Malala Day
Today is a day dedicated to Malala Yousafzai. This young lady survived an assassination attempt at only 15 years old and she has gone on to win the Nobel Peace Prize for her commitment to education.
Literary Adventures for Kids has three online book clubs that feature Malala so there is something for all grade levels. There is an option for elementary, middle, and high school students. Reserve one of these books from your local library.
The online book club for Malala’s Magic Pencil is for elementary students.
The virtual book study for I Am Malala is geared toward middle school students. It uses the young reader’s edition of the I Am Malala novel.
The I Am Malala teen book study is intended for high school students. It is a great addition to a world literature reading plan.
14th – Shark Awareness Day
Shark Awareness Day’s purpose isn’t just to make you aware that sharks exist. The goal is to inform people about the role of sharks in the ecosystem. This holiday is right in the middle of Shark Week.
Shark Stewards offers free printables with facts about various sharks. After you learn a bit about the importance of sharks, watch a few sharks on webcams. I put together a list of aquariums that offer free webcams. There are a few places that show sharks!
19th – National Ice Cream Day
In case July being National Ice Cream Month wasn’t enough, the 19th is National Ice Cream Day. I’m sure kids won’t object to having another ice cream treat.
This book, The Full Scoop by Gail Gibbons, is the perfect storytime book for today.

20th – Space Exploration Day
Space Exploration Day is a great opportunity to learn about the solar system. Here are a few ideas:
- Bake and decorate planet cookies
- Try a few of these solar system books and activities
- Storytime from space
24th – National Amelia Earhart Day
Amelia Earhart was a courageous and accomplished young woman who disappeared while flying in 1939. History books don’t usually provide much information about Amelia Earhart, but we don’t have to let that stop us from teaching about the first female pilot to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.
PeanutButterFishLessons.com has a free Amelia Earhart unit study! That is perfect for this day, but it is also a great addition to many history lessons.
31st – Harry Potter’s Birthday
I’m sure the true Harry Potter fans already know this, but July 31st is Harry Potter’s birthday. This is a great excuse to stay inside the air conditioning and have a Harry Potter movie marathon. These sweet Harry Potter treats pair perfectly with the movies!
