I love to include special days in our lesson plans as often as possible. Fun days can add a bit of whimsy and break up the monotony of the homeschool day. These September activities for kids include book recommendations, ways to celebrate fun holidays and National holidays, hands-on activities, and unit study ideas.

Fall Reading Bundle – This free reading bundle from All About Reading contains seasonal fun ideas. It includes poems, reading selections, and hands-on activities to boost literacy skills. These homeschool ideas are great anytime in September, October, or November.

National Sewing Month – September is National Sewing Month. These ice or heat rice packs are a great beginner sewing activity for kids. My kids made these packs years ago, and we still use them.

National Hispanic Heritage Month – The National Hispanic Heritage website has a fantastic teacher’s resource area. The site features free printables, links to primary documents, and learning lab collections. It is definitely worth checking out.

1st – American Chess Day – Chess is a great game to teach children. My husband taught our son when he was 4. He learned to think through his moves and eventually, that spilled over into his everyday life. Kids of all ages can learn to play chess.

These options can help you teach your child to play chess:

5th and 20th – Pizza Day – This is one of our favorite silly holidays. It is always a great day if pizza is involved. This is one holiday that the entire family can enjoy. September has two Pizza Days:

  • September 5th – National Cheese Pizza Day
  • September 20th – National Pepperoni Pizza Day

We can make homemade pizzas, pop a frozen pizza into the oven, or place a takeout order, but I bet this will be a favorite September activity. My family will likely eat pizza on both days (because the beginning of the school year is exhausting), but these pizza-themed books are a fun addition to a September book basket.

6th – National Read a Book Day – National Read a Book Day is a great reason to visit your local library to find a few new books. Need book suggestions?

7th – Labor Day – Labor Day is more than just a day to have a cookout with friends. It is a day celebrating the American worker. This short TedED video looks like a great way to give kids a quick synopsis of the day.

9th – National Teddy Bear Day – This fun holiday can be celebrated in a few ways:

11th – Patriot Day (Remembrance of September 11th) – September 11th can be a little tricky to discuss with children because most of us have our own emotions tied to memories of the tragic day. Thankfully, books about September 11th can guide the conversation. This book list discusses the historical events, but has an emphasis on the helpers. It is a great resource for teaching young children about 9/11. This day has become a day of service.

12th – National Video Games Day – I’m sure older kids won’t mind celebrating video games. One year, my son spent an entire semester learning about the history of video games. Some of these resources might be helpful for this silly holiday.

13th – Grandparent Day – I think just about everyone loves getting happy mail (aka anything other than fliers and bills). I’m sure grandparents will enjoy receiving a homemade letter or card on Grandparents Day.

13th – Roald Dahl Day – Celebrate Roald Dahl Day (his birthday) with these fun activities to accompany The BFG.

15th – Make a Hat Day – Make a Hat Day is a chance for kids to show off their creative sides. Some kids might like to research different options and then carefully construct an elaborate hat. Other kids might prefer to just make a paper hat out of a piece of paper from the recycling bin. Either option is great!

17th – Constitution Day – The National Constitution Center offers plenty of online resources to make teaching the Constitution easy. Check out the lesson plans, activities, videos, and historical documents regarding the U.S. Constitution.

18th – Rice Krispies Treat Day – It sounds kind of silly, but I have used Rice Krispies quite a bit in my homeschool. Usually, once a year, we make a Rice Krispies map to go along with a geography or history lesson. I don’t know a better way to get kids to pay attention to geography lessons. I’m pretty sure my kids learn through their stomachs, and this is one of the fun ways I incorporate food. Sometimes, creative ways to teach make the biggest impact.

19th – Talk Like a Pirate Day – These pirate engineering ideas look like a really fun way to observe Talk Like a Pirate Day! Kids can practice their engineering, navigation, and cartography skills with hands-on activities.

25th – Comic Book Day – Comic books and graphic novels can be a great way to get kids interested in reading. There are even comic books that align with academic subjects! Last year, my son’s entire reading list consisted of comic books.

25th – Math Storytelling Day – Math Storytelling Day provides a natural opportunity to include picture books in your math lessons. This is a great way to show kids how math is used in real life. These math picture book suggestions come with a few activities to stretch the lesson even further. Picture books can be a great addition to math lessons.

26th – National Johnny Appleseed Day – This free literature-based lesson plan is a great way for elementary-age kiddos to study Johnny Appleseed.

September Field Trip Ideas

One of my favorite things about homeschooling is field trips. We don’t take as many field trips now that my kids are in high school, but when they were younger, we tried to go on field trips as often as possible. The fall season is a great time for field trips!

A few September field trip ideas include:

Apple orchard – Depending on your location, the month of September might be the perfect time of year for apple picking. It is the beginning of fall in many parts of the country. You might even be able to tie in a cooking lesson by baking an apple pie or an art lesson with an apple printing activity.

Library – The library is a great place to spend National Read a Book Day or Comic Book Day. A library scavenger hunt can help kids explore different parts of the library.

September 11th Memorial Museum – Visiting this museum in person will be challenging unless you live near the World Trade Center, but they have a few digital exhibits that are worth exploring.

Senior citizen home – Grandparents Day is a great time to visit a senior citizen home or nursing home. Just make sure you call in advance to see if there are any restrictions. Visitation policies have been all over the place for the last few years.

Nature walk – The change of seasons can be a great time for a nature walk. Try exploring a new nature trail. The fall months can be the perfect time of year for outdoor activities.

I hope these great ideas help you have a great month!
