Fun August Homeschool Ideas {Updated 2026}

August can be a weird month. Summer vacations are wrapping up and school might be starting. These August homeschool ideas can be a way to add a bit of educational whimsy to the month.
Fun August Homeschool Ideas
1st – Planner Day – August 1st is planner day. This is a great reminder to get your homeschool planner ready before the new school year! I have a great free printable homeschool planner available.
2nd – National Coloring Book Day – National Coloring Book Day is a great opportunity to set out a variety of coloring books. There are so many educational coloring books available! The coloring books can be used with a school unit study or independently. They are also a great addition to boredom-busting baskets.
6th – National Root Beer Float Day – Root beer floats are a great visual representation of three states of matter.
- Ice cream – solid
- Root beer – liquid
- Fizzy bubbles – gas
Making a root beer float is incredibly easy. Just scoop some vanilla ice cream into a glass and add root beer.
7th – National Water Balloon Day – Water balloons are a fun summer toy. My kids loved running around having water balloon fights when they were little, but we can also put them to use in our homeschools.
On a driveway or quiet sidewalk, use sidewalk chalk to write the answer to questions related to whatever you are studying. This can be pretty much anything . . .
- Numbers (math problems)
- Words (reading)
- Punctuation (grammar)
- Vocabulary words (vocabulary)
- Letters (phonics)
- Places (history or geography)
- Elements (science)
Then ask your students questions about the material. If they answer the question correctly, they get to throw their water balloon at the answer.
This activity is simple, but it is a fun way to switch things up.
10th – National S’mores Day – S’mores are an essential summer dessert in my house. A few years ago, I planned a few educational activities related to the book The Marshmallow Incident so we could sneak in a little education.

17th – Davy Crockett – Davy Crockett is featured in some American folktales, so kids might be surprised to learn that he was a real person. He explored the Western Frontier and was a US politician before his death at age 49. There are a few simple ways to learn about Davy Crockett on the anniversary of his birth.

- Color a printable Davy Crockett coloring page
- Compare legends and history
22nd – World Folklore Day – Folklore Day celebrates the stories that are passed down within a community. We are fortunate today that many folklores are written down. That means that we can enjoy them even if we are not part of a specific community.
Reading a variety of folklore from around the world is a great way to spend World Folklore Day.

24th – Vesuvius Day – Vesuvius Day remembers the famous Mount Vesuvius eruption in Pompeii, Italy in 79 A.D. It is a great opportunity to learn about Mount Vesuvius, Pompeii, and Italy.
A few educational activities include:

- Make a Rice Krispies map of Italy
- Make a baking soda volcano

30th – Frankenstein Day – Frankenstein Day is August 30th because that is the author’s birthday. This novel was written in 1818 but still shows up on high school reading lists today.
This is a great excuse to sign your teens up for the Frankenstein online book study by Literary Adventures for Kids. Teens will read the book and learn vocabulary, grammar, and literary ideas while also exploring educational rabbit trails like the geography of Frankenstein.
