Everyone fell in love with The Little Blue Truck by Alice Shertle, so naturally, she wrote a Christmas version. Little Blue Truck’s Christmas is a favorite in our house.

So after reading the book for the tenth time, we set out for some fun book-related activities.

Little Blue Truck’s Christmas Small World

What’s better than jumping into the book to experience it in real life?

Creating a small world.

The night after we read the book, I set up a little small world for them to explore and retell the story. 

I set out some Christmas trees, a blue truck, and the animals from the story. I used large pieces of white construction paper as the snowy ground.

They spent over an hour playing with this little world. I caught them retelling the story and creating their own stories.

Christmas Tree Playdough

At the end of the story, Little Blue Truck and Toad decorate their own Christmas tree. So we set out to do the same.

We made some green playdough using this simple cooked playdough recipe. You could add some glitter too.

Once the playdough cooled, I laid it on the table with a Christmas tree cookie cutter and a few loose parts. You can use anything you have lying around. I used beads, buttons, and glass gems as our decorations.

Then I just let them explore and create in their own way.

And yes, we ate candy canes while decorating our trees.

Counting Christmas Trees

And of course, we had to get a little academics into our learning.

Usually, I use our Christmas tree erasers that I got from the Dollar Store, but I couldn’t find them this time. I just printed off a few Christmas tree patterns instead.

We traced each sandpaper number first. Then I asked her to place them in order. Last, she counted out enough trees for each number.

We love doing fun Christmas activities throughout the whole month of December.
